Proper Voltage

Date: 6 hours ago
City: Carlsbad, CA
Contract type: Full time
Visa Sponsorship: Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Proper Voltage makes batteries better. Our Battery Operating System (bOS), powered by the patented Voltage Command Unit, integrates any battery chemistry into any technology quickly and efficiently. We enable sodium-ion, lithium titanate, and other advanced chemistries to work in real-world products without forcing costly redesigns.

Why This Role Matters

We are building multiple new battery packs in parallel, each with different chemistries, geometries, and environmental requirements. These products must be reliable, safe, and high performing. Mechanical engineering is critical to moving projects forward. You will contribute to the design and development of the packs that power our next-generation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the mechanical design of advanced battery packs and subassemblies
  • Work on cell module designs using pouch, cylindrical, and prismatic cell formats
  • Support the early stages of the product development lifecycle including ideation, design reviews, prototype builds, test planning, and design documentation
  • Collaborate with senior mechanical engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver designs on schedule
  • Work closely with Electrical Engineers to package, protect, and provide thermal management for PCBAs
  • Develop CAD in OnShape (new projects) and SOLIDWORKS (legacy designs) and prepare clean documentation including drawings, tolerance stack-ups, BOMs, and assembly instructions
  • Provide thermal and mechanical analysis from component to pack level (PCBAs, mechanical parts and assemblies, cell modules, battery packs) via hand calculations and SimScale (FEA/CFD)
  • Participate in build, validation, and reliability testing activities
  • Participate in lab-based testing of different thermal, vibration, and environmental conditions
  • Willingness to ensure deadlines are met by helping set project scope appropriately and, when necessary, working outside of normal hours
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions during testing and early deployment
  • Assist in transitioning designs from prototype to production, including documentation, BOM cleanup, supplier selection, and contract manufacturer handoff
  • Work with vendors on rapid prototyping, mechanical fabrication, and component sourcing
  • Support design for manufacturability with supplier and fabrication feedback

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 2 to 5 years of experience as a mechanical engineer
  • Direct experience with battery pack design is required
  • OnShape and/or SOLIDWORKS proficiency with ability to create detailed and professional CAD models and drawings
  • Familiarity with DFM, prototyping, and small-scale production workflows
  • Exposure to one or more cell formats: pouch, cylindrical, or prismatic
  • Strong communication skills with attention to documentation and detail
  • Ability to work full-time in Carlsbad, CA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with thermal or structural simulation tools such as SimScale
  • Hands-on experience supporting environmental validation (shock, vibe, ingress)
  • Understanding of high voltage safety and reliability principles
  • Prior work in robotics, micromobility, defense, or grid storage environments

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $95,000 - $125-000 based on experience and qualifications.
  • Equity options as part of the compensation package
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays (PTO) policy

Join us in reimagining the relationship between power and products, and help build a more sustainable, efficient future where any product can access the best battery technology available.
