Carilion Clinic Innovation (CCI) is part investor, accelerator, and commercialization engine for Carilion innovators and inventions. Our metrics center on tangibly improving the health of our community through developing and commercializing Carilion’s patient-benefiting inventions and co-developing with startups and early-stage products that share our vision of the next horizon of better care.
The Innovation Manager (IM) will have the unique opportunity to vanguard and own the Invention Accelerator programs. Additionally, manage a team and funds to meet accelerator goals. The Invention Accelerator programs are designed for developing and de-risking Carilion inventions to advance the inventions to commercialization. The programs' methodologies are anchored in human-centered design, lean startup, and agile principles. The IM works with Carilion innovators and their promising commercializable inventions to advise and inform invention development strategy, scope projects, project manage and collaborate and provide stakeholder management. The IM will closely collaborate with the Commercialization arm of CCI on overall invention strategy.
Innovation Manager Will Perform Specific Job Responsibilities
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, or related field required. Master's, MBA, or Ph.D. Degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum four (4) years relevant experience with:
Project Management: Led cross-functional projects from concept to launch, managing scope, timelines, and budgets.
People Management: Supervised and mentored teams, fostering collaboration and accountability.
Engineering Design: Applied engineering and human-centered design methods to prototype and refine solutions.
Preferred Qualifications Include
Healthcare Management: Experienced in navigating healthcare environments, aligning innovation with clinical and organizational priorities.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Certification in project management preferred.
Other Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated project management skills, a bility to build rapport and establish relationships through strong interpersonal skills, e xcellent written and verbal communication skills, s trong presentation skills, a bility to work independently with minimal direction, p roficiency in word processing, spreadsheet computer software and data analysis. M ust satisfactorily complete orientation processes.

Innovation Manager Will Perform Specific Job Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and supervision to projects in support of CCI. As as liason across disciplinary teams to lead projects that impact other areas.
- Responsible for tracking project and program activities and outcomes.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate, continuous communication with clients, team members, all project stakeholders, and Carilion leadership throughout the life of each project, ensuring thorough evaluation and prioritization of efforts.
- Work in collaboration with the Director of Innovation; develop, implement and update processes for the Invention Accelerator programs, from inception to completion, including scope, definition, planning, tracking, and evaluation of outcomes and determination of next steps.
- Provide comprehensive agile project management – Assist with building project proposals, allocate funding, obtain funding approvals, review and track budgets, resource procurement and planning, project timeline management, facilitate development sprints, conduct reviews and product demos.
