Schedule

  • FT Days, 40 hours/week

Shift

  • Monday-Friday
  • 8am-4:30pm, standard 40 hours/week
  • Must be willing to fill in on the bench as needed
  • No weekends unless you need to fill in
  • Must be able to draw blood
  • Must be able to work the bench as a generalist (Chem, Hematology, Blood Bank, No Micro)
  • Will have 14 direct reports (MLS and MLT staff)

The Role You'll Contribute

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for managing assigned selected aspects of laboratory processes or shifts, which may include workflow, quality control process, writing/reviewing procedures, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, advanced problem solving for customers and coworkers, department equipment or computer maintenance and upgrades, or other tasks assigned. Assists department leadership with meeting goals in all areas. Work customarily involves analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens. Analytical laboratory testing generally requires a moderate to high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in licensed area(s). Depending on campus and department, various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in the work duties customarily performed; on-call hours may also be required. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

The Value You'll Bring To The Team

  • Carries out post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including highly abnormal results) in accordance with established procedures, and providing technical and support information related to laboratory testing for all age groups.
  • Reads, examines, and interprets complex test results, serving as a resource and addressing complex tests/procedures.
  • Manages instrument maintenance and troubleshooting practices.
  • Leads quality control and quality assurance testing.
  • Provides orientation and training to new employees and medical technology students, and documenting orientation and training.
  • Provides guidance to technical and support staff, resolves customer service issues within guidelines, and supports education to clinical staff as appropriate or requested.
  • Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.
  • Assists with Standard Operating Procedures and document control.
  • Participates in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Leads and participates in laboratory performance improvement activities, promoting team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and safety.
  • Completes all expected tests and analytical procedures efficiently and accurately according to established procedures, performance standards, and departmental competency standards, participating in proficiency testing and adhering to federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Manages quality assessment, technical oversight, problem solving, scheduling, interviewing applicants, staff performance input, training, and competency evaluations.
  • Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including equipment maintenance, function checks, documentation, inventory control, specimen collection, biological specimen processing, cleaning, disinfection, quality control, and calibration.

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLSASCP)

OR

  • Medical Lab Scientist (MLSAMT)
  • 3 MLS Work Experience Required
  • Must be able to draw blood
  • Must be able to work the bench as a generalist (Chem, Hematology, Blood Bank, No Micro)
  • Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures and processes performed in department or work area assigned
  • Follows and ensures adherence of staff, to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision
  • Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities
  • Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings
  • Able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Ability to operate computer systems in order to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other related documents
