University of Bristol - School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience

Date: 5 hours ago
City: Bristol, CT
Salary: $43,482 - $67,486 per year
Contract type: Full time
The role

The School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering (CADE) is seeking to make a permanent appointment to the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Bristol was recently announced as “AI University of the Year” and this new appointment reflects the School’s strategic commitment to AI for Engineering applications.

Suitable candidates for the post will have a strong academic and/or industrial background in research. Applicants must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of their research specialism and demonstrate plans to develop research activities and how this will link to and expand existing research activities.

This post will specifically support the new postgraduate-taught programme in Engineering with AI (first intake planned for September 2026), and the successful candidate will be expected to organise and potentially lead aspects of the teaching of this programme. The ideal candidate will also be able to contribute undergraduate teaching in machine learning (ML) and AI across our existing Aero, Civil and Design programmes, all of which are ranked in the top 5 nationally.

If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering science technology and eager to collaborate with leading experts in the field, we encourage you to apply. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Grade J, K (Lecturer), or L (Senior Lecturer) position, based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.

What will you be doing?

Role holders will be responsible for research, teaching, and related administration, at both undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels. For the senior lecturer level, the role will entail leadership in developing and overseeing research and teaching activities at all levels. They will make a significant leadership and/or management contribution in the area of research and teaching.

The appointees at the Lecturer level (J/K) are expected to contribute actively to the School’s ongoing teaching and research initiatives while working towards establishing their own independent teaching and research portfolios. Those appointed at the Senior Lecturer level (L) should demonstrate a proven track record in independent teaching and research, securing external funding, developing long-term strategic plans, and contributing to the management and leadership activities within the group.

The Main Purpose Of This Position Is To

  • develop and deliver high-quality teaching on the new MSc Engineering with AI programme and support the management of the programme, and;
  • conduct high-quality research in the area of machine learning and AI as applied to engineering problems.

The position will also provide effective academic administration within the CADE School of Engineering. The post will be on Pathway 1 (see Section 7 in Further Particulars).

You should apply if

  • A strong research background in a suitable area of ML/AI applied to engineering problems relevant to the School; for example aerodynamics, fluids, aeroacoustics, composite structures, structural mechanics, flight dynamics, control.
  • A proven ability to perform independent research and collaborate effectively with others.
  • A clear and innovative vision for future research that complements and enhances current activities within the CADE School.
  • A passion for teaching and the ability to develop and deliver engaging, high-quality education in ML/AI applied to engineering problems relevant to the School.
  • A collaborative approach to both research and teaching. If you have a desire to make a significant impact through both your research and teaching, we encourage you to apply.
