Luna Innovations is the global leader in fiber optic sensing focused on solving some of the world’s most complex measurement challenges across multiple industries. We are looking for a Signal Processing Engineer to join our team based in Missoula, MT. This position emphasizes signal processing (primarily focused on acoustic data), strong mechanical aptitude, and an interest in hands-on, practical work. While programming experience is highly valued, we welcome candidates who are new to computer programming but eager to learn and grow in this area.
The Role
Reporting to Senior Signal Processing Engineer, you will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:
The ideal candidate will have foundational knowledge in signal processing, a strong mechanical aptitude, and a willingness to learn programming skills as needed. We are looking for a motivated individual eager to grow within a multidisciplinary team while contributing to innovative projects in signal processing and acoustic data analysis. The ability to work with advanced distributed sensing systems and a willingness to travel occasionally to experimental and client sites is essential.
Qualifications/Experience
The Role
Reporting to Senior Signal Processing Engineer, you will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:
- Assisting in development of Silixa’s FiberWrap flow metering application with an emphasis on data processing and system integration, including theoretical, hardware, and software components.
- Applying signal processing techniques to data acoustic data obtained from Silixa’s industry-leading iDAS TM and Carina distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems.
- Contributing to the ongoing development of Silixa products offered in the market areas of alternative energy (e.g., carbon, capture, utilization and storage; geothermal), oil/gas, and defense
- Participating in hands-on experimental work, including system setup, fiber installation, and equipment troubleshooting.
- Collaborating with team members to support data processing, hardware configuration, and technical proposal development.
- Learning and adhering to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) practices while actively promoting safe work practices.

Qualifications/Experience
- BS in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or related fields with a focus on signal processing, data analysis, or mechanical systems.
- Preferred MS (or equivalent) in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or related disciplines with expertise in signal processing or system modeling.
- Basic understanding of acoustic data processing or distributed sensing systems.
- Familiarity with Python or other programming tools (e.g., MATLAB, C).
- Demonstrable problem solving and analysis ability (examples and/or portfolio encouraged!)
- Fluent in English
- Work with colleagues across all business functions both internally and with clients (commercial, production, operations, support, R&D)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create detailed technical reports and presentations.
- Strong collaboration skills, capable of working with cross-functional teams and clients across technical and commercial domains.
- A hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving, with a willingness to “get your hands dirty” as needed.
- Commitment to occasional travel for on-site experiments and client interactions.
- Very occasionally required to lift, carry, or move materials weighing up to 25 lbs; heavier items may require assistance.
- May require occasional bending, reaching, or kneeling when accessing files, materials, or interacting with production floor personnel.
- Primarily office-based work.
- Work environment includes exposure to controlled temperature and humidity.
- Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels and bright lighting from nearby machinery or equipment.
