Instructional Designer

A-C Electric Company

Date: 1 day ago
City: Bakersfield, CA
Salary: $65,000 - $95,000 per year
Contract type: Full time

Mission:

The Instructional Designer supports Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) by translating their expertise into clear, facilitator‑ready learning materials for instructor‑led (virtual and in‑person) delivery, in addition to the creation of eLearning, QRGs, and video scripts. This role takes its cue from SMEs for content substance and adjusts that content using adult‑learning methodologies, so the message is captured faithfully and communicated effectively to learners. This role will own the end-to-end scope of learning design work, and support SMEs to facilitate sessions by providing the best format for learning (guides, prompts, timings, and participant aids) built around information the SME already knows deeply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Development. Create adult-learning experiences, including visual design and identifying ideal delivery methods. Translate SME‑provided source material into facilitator‑ready materials—facilitator guides/notes, session visuals, activity prompts, and participant QRGs—while preserving the SME’s message. Sequence content into learning experiences that flow logically and engage learners with purposeful interaction and checks for understanding; write in plain language and ensure accessibility.
  • Consultative Needs Assessment. Partner with SMEs and/or stakeholders to identify the core purpose of the training, co‑create behavioral learning objectives that support that purpose, and define what success looks like from a frame of actualized ROI. Convert broad requests into right‑sized learning solutions, clarify audiences, and surface constraints and measures that matter to the business.
  • Stakeholder/SME Collaboration & Communication. Plan purposeful SME & stakeholder interviews, follow-ups and efficient asynchronous input collection; confirm understanding with concise write‑backs and annotated outlines. Maintain alignment through transparent status and documentation of decisions.
  • Targeted Facilitation Support. Aid delivery by facilitating dry‑runs, pilot sessions, and train‑the‑trainer workshops. Provide facilitator‑friendly formats, prompts, and timing so SMEs can deliver confidently without new content lift.
  • Outcome Assessment, Training Tracking, & Metrics Reporting. Create and deploy pre/post checks, brief in‑session comprehension polls, and behavioral commitment prompts aligned to the learning objectives. Track attendance, completions, adoption signals, and feedback; publish periodic snapshots and insights that inform iterative improvements and demonstrate impact.

Additional Job Duties:

  • Support SME facilitators (tech checks, timing, polls, chat).
  • Maintain a course catalog of both internal and external learning.
  • Coordinate light vendor/contractor work as needed and perform editorial QA on deliverables.
  • Contribute to reusable component libraries (activity patterns, visual modules) to accelerate future builds.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 3–5+ years creating ILT/VILT learning content for adult learners (facilitator materials, participant aids, QRGs) in close collaboration with SMEs.
  • Strong instructional writing and synthesis skills; comfort interviewing SMEs and aligning scope to outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of content authoring and instructional design tools, common survey/quiz tooling, and learning management systems.
  • Demonstrated accessibility awareness (contrast, fonts, alt text) and meticulous QA habits.
  • Bachelor’s in Instructional Design, Communications, English, Education, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).

Pay range: Pay Range: $65,000 - $95,000. Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
