Description

We're seeking an experienced, dynamic Director of Membership & Outreach to spearhead membership growth and retention programs, increasing the number of girl and adult leaders participating in Girl Scouts. This pivotal role is responsible for developing and leading a state-wide team (covering 22 counties) focused on expanding the council’s reach, deepening member and partner engagement, and driving long-term retention. In this key leadership role, responsibilities include designing and executing a comprehensive membership strategy that supports girl and volunteer acquisition and retention goals.

The Director of Membership & Outreach, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, is based at either the Leadership Center in Columbia or the Greenville Office. It requires flexibility to include event functions scheduled in the evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the state, mentoring and coaching team members, and building relationships with community partners.

  • Partner with executive leadership to set growth targets and goals for girl and adult membership, retention, and volunteer engagement; implement strategic plans, managing departmental budget.
  • Lead the execution of membership strategy to attract and retain youth members (ages 5-17), as well as adult members and volunteers.
  • Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure membership efforts align with program delivery, camp offerings, and council events to ensure high-quality experiences.
  • Drive community-based recruitment efforts by building partnerships with schools, local organizations, and faith-based institutions; lead mission-aligned recruitment efforts and outreach across diverse markets, prioritizing outreach to underrepresented communities.
  • Identify and implement innovative retention initiatives that strengthen the Girl Scout experience to increase year-over-year renewals and promote long-term engagement.
  • Oversee membership data analysis from recruitment to retention, identifying trends, assessing performance, and driving data-informed decisions that expand reach and deepen impact.
  • Collaborate with Advancement to support sponsorships that expand financial aid for membership and uniforms.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on materials and messaging for consistent outreach, follow-up, and conversion of leads, welcoming and supporting from the first interaction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or High School Diploma/GED and equivalent experience required.
  • Proven success in growing and retaining membership with volunteer management over 3+ years.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and team-building skills with a proven ability to motivate and retain high-performing team members.
  • Proficient in sales and marketing strategies, lead management, customer engagement, and closing techniques.
  • Solid MS Office experience, CRM management platform (Salesforce preferred) as well as solid ability in managing multiple projects and priorities with sound judgment and attention to deadlines.
  • Skilled in financial oversight, budgeting, and operational planning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively across diverse backgrounds and resolve conflicts.
  • Membership in the Girl Scout organization required, subscribing to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Must have reliable transportation, possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance meeting the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage, and submit to a background check.
