Data Engineering Co-Op
AprilAire

As a Data Engineering Co-Op, you’ll play a key role in building the data pipelines that make everything else possible — from dashboards that tell the story of what’s happening inside a home, to experiments that explore how AI might predict air quality changes. The goal of our co-op program is to partner with candidates for more than one term to foster the learning of the products made by RPC as well as contribute to meaningful work experience for the students.
Students must be able to be 100% onsite at our Sun Prairie, WI location.
This role is:
- 80% Data Engineering - building and cleaning IoT data pipelines and clean data sets.
- 10% AI Exploration - testing out small machine learning ideas with prepared datasets.
- 10% Dashboards - making simple, clear visualizations that share insights with our teams.
It’s a chance to get hands-on with real-world data while also seeing how AI and analytics come to life.
What You’ll Do
- Build and organize datasets from IoT devices (think temperature, humidity, air sensors).
- Write Python scripts to clean and transform data.
- Support experiments that test new ways to classify or predict indoor air quality.
- Build dashboards or reports that help non-technical teammates understand the data.
What You’ll Learn
- How to design and scale data pipelines for real-world IoT data.
- How clean, structured datasets fuel AI and machine learning models.
- Practical experience with cloud tools (AWS/Azure/GCP exposure).
- Basics of data visualization (Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
- The end-to-end flow from sensor → pipeline → insight.
- Currently working toward a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or similar.
- Senior or graduate status preferred, but not required.
- Some experience with Python (pandas, NumPy) and SQL.
- Interest in data wrangling, feature engineering, and building data work-flows.
- Curiosity about how AI and data visualization add value once the pipelines are in place.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above
- Strong interest in working with products for the consumer marketplace that will make a difference to there overall health and wellbeing of our customers.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and to participate and contribute positively in work teams.
