Brief Description
Job Objective:
Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager, the WIP Sterile Processing Supervisor oversees daily sterile processing operations within the Women’s and Infant Pavilion (WIP) SPD area. This position provides on-site leadership, technical expertise, and staff supervision to ensure proper decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with AAMI, AORN, TJC, CDPH, and hospital standards. The Supervisor acts as a liaison between the main SPD, WIP surgical services, and other departments, ensuring quality, consistency, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Supervision
- Oversees daily workflow of WIP SPD to ensure timely processing and delivery of instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
- Provides direct supervision to assigned SPD Technicians, monitors performance, attendance, and compliance with department standards.
- Conducts daily huddles, communicates priorities, and ensures alignment with main SPD operations.
- Provides input on scheduling, assignments, and coverage needs, coordinates with SPD Manager for staffing adjustments.
- Participate in interviewing and training new personnel.
- Serves as a mentor and technical resource for staff, reinforcing adherence to IFU and regulatory standards.
- Operations
- Ensures proper decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments in accordance with manufacturer IFUs and regulatory requirements.
- Monitors quality assurance measures including biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
- Oversees maintenance of sterilization logs and documentation for compliance.
- Assist Manager with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures and competency checklists for WIP SPD.
- Monitors equipment performance and coordinates with Biomed and Engineering for preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Maintains safe and aseptic work conditions within the department; ensures staff use PPE and comply with infection control standards.
- Education, Training, and Quality
- Provides orientation and competency validation for new and existing staff.
- Assists with department in-service education, audits, and competency assessments.
- Participate in department quality assurance, infection prevention, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Reports variances, equipment failures, or process deviations to SPD Manager promptly.
- Supports the development of cross-training between main SPD and WIP SPD to maintain coverage and consistency.
- Customer Service / Communication
- Serves as primary point of contact for WIP Operating Room leadership and staff regarding SPD-related issues.
- Collaborates with OR, Labor & Delivery, and ancillary departments to ensure instrument availability and case readiness.
- Promotes teamwork, accountability, and open communication between WIP SPD and main SPD staff.
- Assists the SPD Manager in preparing reports, metrics, and data summaries for department meetings or performance improvement initiatives.
- Participates in departmental audits, environmental care rounds, and tracer activities as needed.
- Supports the scheduling of preventive maintenance with Biomed and Engineering when equipment issues are identified.
- Provides input on supply and equipment purchasing requests as requested by the SPD Manager.
- Assists in coordinating vendor visits for instrument repairs or demonstrations under the direction of the SPD Manager.
- Maintains department bulletin boards, communication binders, and training documentation.
- Supports the SPD Manager in organizing in-service education and staff competency fairs.
- Assists in maintaining accurate records for sterilization load logs, temperature monitoring, and biological indicator results.
- Participates in multidisciplinary process improvement projects within Surgical Services when assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required to ensure efficient department operation and continuity of services.
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of AAMI, AORN, TJC, CDPH, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory standards.
- Comprehensive understanding of sterile processing functions including decontamination, sterilization, assembly, and distribution.
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment specific to Women’s Services.

Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a Sterile Processing education program required.
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in sterile processing within an acute care hospital required.
- At least one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in Women’s Services or L&D surgical environments highly desirable.
- Current certification as a Central Service Technician (CRCST or CSPDT) required.
- Certification in Leadership (CHL) preferred or required within one year of hire.
- Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) preferred.
