District 1199NM is seeking a dedicated and passionate Organizer/Representative to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in coordinating initiatives aimed at community engagement and support in a hospital setting. This position requires strong leadership skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to fostering positive change within the community. Must have Union experience for 1 year or more.
Responsibilities - Organizing
- Increase Membership in all bargaining units assigned.
- Organize and motivate members, current and future and must have a working knowledge of Labor Law regarding Organizing.
- Know the history of District 1199NM plus communicate "The Union's Value" at New Employee Orientation throughout the District
- Produce Flyers and/or Leaflets for dissemination to general membership on current issues.
- Organize all Chapter Membership Meetings monthly.
- Update all Union Bulletin Boards in all hospitals of their assigned areas of work.
- Training of Activists/Delegates regarding "Union Value and Basics and their Worker Rights
- Weekly "Rounding" in the hospital to increase membership and Union's Visibility
- Other duties as assigned.
- Provide Representation of employees to hospital's management, must have a working knowledge of Labor Law regarding Representational Requirements as well as knowledge of their assigned area's CBA's requirements.
- Understand obligations required of Unions in representing employees. Know the limits of those requirements.
- Maintain a productive and positive working relationship with their assigned hospital's HR departments.
- Coach employees in the BU being represented about their contract, and how to "Stand for their Rights" within the CBA. Provide delegates/activists training about their contract.
- Attend Labor/Management Meetings and help the Chair of Committee on the Union side produce the agenda.
- Understand and support the Collective Bargaining Process for the Chapters in their assigned areas.
- Assist Chief Negotiator by organizing BU around negotiations by leafletting, one on one meetings, telephone & texting, organizing rallies of protest, emails and social media.
- Help Union leadership strategize and implement Chapter goals.
- Present cases to Executive Board meetings regarding grievances that are up for arbitration.
- Work with lawyers on preparing for and during member arbitrations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with labor & community organizations promoting District 1199NM, worker rights, fair wages, safe staffing, and other labor issues.
- Enhance labor, HR and legal knowledge by staying current on relevant labor issues, attending educational opportunities, National Labor College courses, AFSCME and other labor trainings, Conferences and Assemblies
- Complete other educational opportunities identified by District Leadership in a timely manner.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with labor contracts and contract enforcement.
- Proven organizing experience with healthcare employees.
- Ability to work directly in the field with union members.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Commitment to advancing workers' rights and improving workplace conditions.
