Mechanical engineer at an energy startup -- systems and integration
Mesodyne

Mesodyne is a startup company revolutionizing power generation with its innovative LightCell technology--using thermophotovoltaics to provide efficient, silent, reliable, long-endurance power from any fuel. By bridging the gap between batteries and internal combustion engines, Mesodyne's LightCell technology provides more than a 10x improvement in endurance for unmanned vehicles, wearables, and various other equipment. At Mesodyne, we are committed to bringing groundbreaking products to the industrial and defense sectors, with multiple existing contracts and numerous upcoming business opportunities.
We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer who thrives on bringing complex hardware to life. This role goes beyond pure design work; you'll be integrating the mechanical systems you help design—fluid loops, thermal components, and precision assemblies—with the electronics and firmware that control them. If you enjoy seeing the complete picture and want to own the process from physical build to a fully functional system, this is the role for you.
Responsibilities:
- Own the Physical Build: You will lead the hands-on assembly of LightCell prototypes, integrating key mechanical subsystems like heat exchangers, fluid loops, and vacuum packages.
- System-Level Troubleshooting: Be the first line of defense in debugging issues where the mechanical, electrical, and software domains intersect. You'll diagnose everything from fluid leaks to unexpected vibrations.
- Build Test Infrastructure: You will design and fabricate custom test fixtures and jigs to validate the performance and reliability of our integrated electromechanical systems.
- Collaborate on Design: Provide critical feedback to the design team on how to improve the manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability of future hardware.
Qualifications and skills:
- BS or MS/MEng in mechanical engineering, or other engineering field with strong mechanical engineering skills, is required.
- Experience creating complex mechanical systems is required: ideation, CAD, design for manufacturing, integration, testing, etc. Prior industry experience is desired but not required: strong extracurricular projects, personal projects, and undergraduate research projects will meet this requirement.
- Demonstrated ability to build physical prototypes is required. Strong hands-on skills working with intricate mechanical assemblies are required.
- An aptitude for understanding how sensors, circuits, and code interact with your mechanical designs.
Location:
This position is based at our facility in Somerville, MA.
