Position Overview

The Staff Geoscientist position provides a wide range of support for geoscience-oriented projects. A Staff Geoscientist is expected to approach assigned tasks proactively and critically, applying technical skills for both field and office work. Duties are primarily field-related and include activities such as implementing soil, groundwater, and soil vapor field investigations; sampling various environmental media; and conducting site reconnaissance activities under the direct supervision of project managers and/or senior staff.


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in earth or physical sciences or environmental engineering.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience conducting environmental sampling, Phase l Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), and/or similar applicable experience.


Core Competencies

A Staff Geoscientist is required to meet the following in addition to the Core Competencies of Geoscience Technician:

  • Able to efficiently prepare for projects and perform all required fieldwork tasks.
  • Able to accurately recognize indications of contamination and other relevant information to the project during fieldwork.
  • Able to meet deadlines and hours per task targets as assigned by senior personnel; communicate early any potential failure to meet these targets.


Performance Expectations and Responsibilities

A Staff Geoscientist is required to conduct these tasks safely, independently, and efficiently under the immediate supervision of a Geoscientist I, Senior Geoscientist, or Principal within the applicable timeframe and schedule. The position requires a “consultant” approach and mentality to meet project schedule requirements and demands. A Staff Geoscientist must be able to work variable hours, long days, and early mornings, depending on the fieldwork schedule. A Staff Geoscientist is expected to be physically capable of conducting sampling projects, data collection, and site investigations.


Employees in this position are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner in all work settings, representing ERO with respectful courteous behavior and a positive workplace attitude. A Staff Geoscientist is expected to interact with clients, attend marketing events and conferences as requested, and prepare scopes of work and proposal documents as needed.


Site Assessment Work (approximately 10% of time)

  • Assist with data collection, records review, and records evaluation associated with the ASTM International (ASTM) E1527 Phase I ESA Process.
  • Prepare draft reports in accordance with ASTM standards for Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, Vapor Encroachment Screening, and/or other pertinent reports.
  • Consolidate field data and prepare draft interpretations and presentations of the data.
  • Assist with all aspects of environmental site assessments and site investigations.


Fieldwork (approximately 75% of time)

  • Prepare for field projects by ordering necessary equipment, acquiring required permits, and assisting with logistical planning.
  • Assist with site characterization activities; soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling; and other monitoring activities.
  • Be able to work independently in the field.


Post-field (approximately 15% of time)

  • Assist with drafting Phase I ESA and monitoring reports.
  • Maintain field equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Effective communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Organization, managing multiple priorities, and oversight of project subcontractors and deliverables.
  • Working knowledge and experience to complete an ASTM E1527 Phase I ESA.
  • Assist with preparation of site characterization and assessment reports.
  • Ability to collaborate with field teams and cross-functional teams throughout the company.

Hybrid Office

This position is based in an ERO designated office with an option for a hybrid work schedule based on employee performance, business needs, fieldwork, and client needs.


Physical Requirements

The project areas may be located at high elevations in rugged terrain. Applicants must be physically capable and possess the skills necessary to perform all aspects of fieldwork A Staff Geoscientist must be able to lift 30 to 50 pounds. Work may also include periods of sedentary work including sitting / standing and use of a computer.


Compensation

Full time hourly position: $25-$34 per hour depending on experience.
