Position Title: Child Nutrition Driver
Department: Outreach
FLSA Status: Full Time Hourly/Non-Exempt
Schedule: 40 Hours per Week/Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm (Includes 30-minute unpaid meal break).

Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food. We partner with 360 community partners in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.
The core of our work is achieved by partnering with local agencies that distribute food to individuals and families in need. The key partners that make up our emergency food network are food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters. Other not-for-profit agencies such as day care centers, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, and group homes are able to utilize membership as a way to supplement their agency food needs.
Our Vision is to see a community where everyone has access to nutritious food and no one is hungry.
Our Mission is leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food.
Hunger Is a Very Serious Problem In The United States Today. Despite Its Great Wealth, An Estimated One In Eight Americans Rely On Emergency Food Assistance. Among The Thousands Of People Who Depend On Charitable Food Programs In Central And Northern New York, And The Mohawk Valley
The Child Nutrition Driver plays a critical role in supporting the Food Bank’s mission by ensuring timely, safe, and accurate delivery of nutritious meals to child nutrition sites, including Kids Café and Summer Food Service Program locations. This position also provides delivery support for other Food Bank programs and partner agency deliveries as needed. The Driver is expected to operate Food Bank vehicles in accordance with safety standards while representing the organization professionally in the community.

The Child Nutrition Driver plays a critical role in supporting the Food Bank’s mission by ensuring timely, safe, and accurate delivery of nutritious meals to child nutrition sites, including Kids Café and Summer Food Service Program locations. This position also provides delivery support for other Food Bank programs and partner agency deliveries as needed. The Driver is expected to operate Food Bank vehicles in accordance with safety standards while representing the organization professionally in the community.
Essential Functions
- Deliver child nutrition meals to designated program sites, following approved food safety protocols (HACCP).
- Assist with deliveries and pickups for other Food Bank programs and partner agencies as assigned.
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with food vendors and program site staff.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned vehicle and maintain cleanliness.
- Report any vehicle maintenance concerns promptly to the Transportation Manager.
- Ensure accurate documentation of delivery records, including temperature logs and site acknowledgments.
- Serve as a liaison between program sites and the Child Nutrition Manager, communicating site needs or issues.
- Follow all Food Bank policies, including safety, confidentiality, and vehicle usage standards.
- Ability to lift and carry 60+ pounds repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Able to work in varying weather conditions and environments.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to operate a Food Bank vehicle (non-CDL); CDL a plus but not required.
- Occasional availability for early morning or evening shifts, as program needs dictate.
Education & Certification Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
- CDL Class B a plus, but not required.
- This position will receive a pre-employment drug test (if applicant has CDL only) and background check. Food Bank of Central New York complies with all applicable state and federal laws pertaining to drug testing and background checks, including Article 23-A.
- Minimum 1 year of driving experience preferred.
- Experience in food delivery or logistics preferred.
- Prior experience working with diverse populations or in community service settings is a plus.
- Strong ability to use good judgment and work independently.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to interact professionally with diverse groups, including partner agencies, site staff, and community members.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly regarding food safety and delivery documentation.
- Basic understanding of food handling and sanitation preferred.
- Bi-or multi-lingual preferred.
