Summary: Join our team! Lead and train grounds staff to maintain a safe, clean, and beautiful college campus. Plan, schedule, and inspect landscape operations while overseeing staff, equipment, and daily maintenance.

Classification Summary

Under general direction, oversees the operational maintenance activities of the campus grounds and landscape areas which may include recreational and athletic fields. Oversees the daily activities of grounds and landscaping personnel.

Classification Standard Duties

Responsible for supervision of special projects assigned for grounds and landscaping. Coordinates equipment operations, equipment maintenance, and landscape debris recycling; orders material and equipment. Assists in implementing detailed landscape plans; assists in modifications and adjustments to landscape to comply with ADA regulations. Coordinates activities of support staff engaged in implementation and administration of landscape projects; oversees the supervision of assigned personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; makes recommendations for personnel actions. Receives and responds to inquiries from campus community and members of general public and investigates and resolves problems related to water use, landscape projects, and refuse removal; investigates and develops ways to improve the scope and quality of services provided; makes recommendations as appropriate; provides planning, leadership, direction, and technical expertise as a resource to the campus on landscape and grounds services. Participates in the development of department goals and objectives; recommends, implements, and administers policies and procedures to enhance operations. Implements recordkeeping procedures and manages applicable department records on employees, equipment, and maintenance activities. Provides advice and assistance and services as a resource person to campus administrators concerning grounds and landscape facilities; maintains facility use schedules of grounds and landscaping. Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Required Education:None; Required Experience:Five (5) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.; Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.; Required Certification/License:

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of greenhouse operations, propagation methods, chemical applications, insect/disease control, plant nutrition, and pruning methods. Knowledge of athletic turf maintenance at the inter-collegiate level. Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.; SKILLS:Records maintenance skills. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.; ABILITIES:Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals. Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

Responsible for the planning, organizing, and directing of routine maintenance operations. Trains and supervises the grounds staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient groundskeeping operation. Requires knowledge in the care and use of power equipment. Supervises two or more full-time employees; Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees, or makes related recommendations; Schedules work to meet normal requirement without interfering with residents or occupants of office space; Directs workers performing landscape maintenance tasks; Develops and participates in a training program which familiarizes custodial staff with particular problems involved in grounds services including improved techniques; Inspects exterior landscapes, campus turf, bike paths, walkways, signage and grounds equipment to observe the results of work; Requisitions appropriate materials and supplies; Prepares and submits appropriate reports and memoranda regarding grounds dept. policies and procedures; Recommends budget, materials and equipment for the area.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

Risk: Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
