The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars in grants from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund the restoration and management across these ecosystems.

Major Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, manage responsible professional work overseeing major aspects of the In-house Tree Planting Program, including tree planting, tree removal, stump removal, site surveying, and crew and contract management.
  • Schedule, conduct field surveys to compile contract books for in-house tree planting sites.
  • Fill out daily and weekly reports, documenting all work-related equipment, materials and staff hours.
  • Perform site inspections. Inspect and document conditions at tree planting sites to assess planting viability. Ensure that all assigned tree planting sites and facilities are clean, safe, and organized. Correct safety hazards immediately. Ensure that all safety protocols are being followed by crews.
  • Assess and manage work to be done by contractors; engage directly and train employees involved in professional forestry activities.
  • Supervise crews during tree and stump removals, tree planting, watering and establishment.
  • Report to field office as needed.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and maintain working relationships with officials, community boards and groups, both within and outside the Agency.
  • Communicate priorities and or safety issues to the Senior Forester and forestry management.
  • Prepare reports, evaluations, budgets, and correspondence related to the above. Research new materials and methods related to Parks’ urban forestry activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject, or;
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and one year of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;
  • An associate degree from an accredited college or university, with a specialization in forestry or a related subject and three (3) years of full-time professional experience in forestry or arboricultural work or;
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1",”2", or “3" above. However, all candidates must have at least an associate degree with a specialization in forestry or a related subject.

License Requirement

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment."

Preferred Skills

  • Certification as an Arborist from the International Society of Arboriculture. 2. Strong knowledge of agency structure and divisions and/or government operations. 3. Excellent writing, supervisory, administrative and interpersonal skills. 4. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and ForMS. 5. Available to work evenings and weekends.
