Scope of the job
As our Vice President Transactions, you will lead the execution of business development transactions, including structuring, negotiation, and closing of M&A, partnerships, and licensing deals. This role reports to the Chief Business Officer (CBO) and will collaborate with all cross-functional teams to drive the deal successfully to completion.
Our Business Development team will be based in the San Franciso Bay Area.

Base compensation for this position ranges from $340,000 to $360,000. Actual base compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including experience, qualifications, job-related knowledge, demonstrated skills and geographic location. The company reserves the right to modify base salary ranges at any time. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Galapagos’ performance bonus plan and long-term incentive program. This role reports to the Chief Business Officer (CBO) and will collaborate with all cross-functional teams to drive the deal successfully to completion.
Our Business Development team will be based in the San Franciso Bay Area.
Your role
Deal Strategy and Execution
- Drive the deal process from term sheet to closing and beyond to integration
- Lead and coordinate all aspects of due diligence, working closely with internal cross-functional teams as well as external advisors and consultants
- Develop detailed business cases and valuation models for companies, assets and transaction terms
- Negotiate transaction structures and contracts to optimize value creation
- Manage a transaction team composed of BD team members, bankers, lawyers, consultants, and other advisors
- Partner with our Search & Evaluation team to identify and assess transactable assets; represent the company in meetings with bankers, investors, and at industry conferences
- Collaborate with the CFO and CSO teams to ensure accurate forecasting and integration of financial models
- Prepare clear and compelling deal documentation and presentations for the management committee and board of directors
- Prior senior-level business development role, or at least VP-level experience in investment banking, with a proven track record of leading complex transactions
- Advanced degree in Life Sciences, Business, Law, or a related field, combined with strong business acumen
- Demonstrated success in negotiating and closing value-creating transactions; strong and credible deal sheet required
- Deep understanding of key principles of contracts, deal structures, intellectual property, and valuation drivers relevant to licensing, collaborations, and related transactions
- Strong ability to build and nurture trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders across commercial, scientific, financial, and legal functions
- Established professional network in the biopharma or academic ecosystem is strongly preferred
- Proactive, self-driven, and highly structured, with the ability to excel in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment
