The Global Material Science Department is looking for a passionate Chemist to join the New Material Design team in Akron, Ohio. This hands-on role focuses on developing innovative tire materials by applying chemical principles, exploring structure-property relationships, and collaborating with suppliers. The Chemist will translate performance needs like traction and durability into material designs that deliver differentiated results.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop new material technologies that optimize performance while balancing cost and environmental impact.
  • Design and execute laboratory studies to evaluate material technologies, interpreting results based on the underlying chemistry and physics.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers, design teams, and applied development groups to ensure alignment and successful technology integration.
  • Provide on-site support during plant trials to validate material performance and assist in troubleshooting.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively across technical and non-technical audiences to support decision-making and project advancement.

What We’re Looking For

  • PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or similar field is required with a preference for Synthetic, Organic, or Organometallic Chemistry degrees.
  • Experience in new material and chemical development, ideally within the automotive or tire industry and/or experience in a research and development organization, with a strong record of innovation and technical contributions.

  • Exceptional communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Must be open-minded, optimistic, and collaborative, with a strong sense of urgency and initiative.
  • Experience in elastomeric composite design and formulation is a strong asset.
