The Principal Software & AI Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of advanced digital and AI-driven software solutions across the Digital Solutions team. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership, driving innovation through applied artificial intelligence, machine learning, and software architecture. The Principal Software & AI Engineer manages the digital solutions software technology roadmap, aligns technical objectives with organizational goals, evaluates external technologies, and ensures the successful execution of high-impact software initiatives.
This position serves as a key technical leader, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, and guiding the company’s digital and AI strategy toward scalable, efficient, and forward-looking solutions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Define, maintain, and execute the digital solutions team roadmap to align software projects with corporate and departmental goals.
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of enterprise-grade software applications using modern frameworks and cloud infrastructure.
- Collaborate with the General Manager and executive leadership to ensure software initiatives deliver measurable results and align with all relevant corporate initiatives
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, best practices, and system architecture documentation.
- Research, develop, and deploy AI-driven systems and solutions that enhance internal efficiency and/or client-facing capabilities.
- Lead AI feasibility studies, prototype development, and full implementation of AI frameworks including machine learning, LLMs, and computer vision.
- Vet, evaluate, and integrate AI platforms and third-party tools for scalability, compliance, and strategic value.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to identify and prioritize AI adoption opportunities and automation initiatives.
- Identify, assess, and manage relationships with external software and AI vendors.
- Conduct technical due diligence for third-party solutions, ensuring alignment with company standards and security requirements.
- Oversee vendor contracts, integrations, and long-term technology partnerships, coordinating with internal legal department.
- Lead by example, collaborating within the digital solutions team, fostering professional development and technical growth.
- Collaborate across departments—R&D, Manufacturing, Operations, and Product Management—to synchronize digital strategies and roadmaps.
- Communicate project progress, risks, and outcomes to leadership and stakeholders.
- Stay informed on advancements in AI, ML, XR, and emerging software technologies.
- Drive innovation through rapid prototyping, experimentation, and adoption of new tools.
- Recommend and implement process automation and workflow optimization strategies.
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement and ethical technology development.
- Communicate respectfully and effectively across all levels of the organization.

- Report potential issues, risks, or opportunities for improvement promptly to leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of the department and organization.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate the following competencies:
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, for industrial and/or mission critical assets or related operational use cases.
- 1+ year experience leveraging AI platforms and/or ML development libraries.
- Advanced proficiency in C#, Python, SQL, and modern frameworks including. NET, Node.js, React, and Azure/AWS.
- Demonstrated expertise in AI/ML frameworks (Scikit-learn, Databricks, Snowflake, etc.) and applied AI lifecycle management.
- Proven ability to lead technical teams, define software roadmaps, and deliver high-quality production systems.
- Experience developing or integrating AR/VR/XR applications using Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar tools.
- Skilled in vendor vetting, software evaluation, and partnership management.
- Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Familiarity with Agile development, Atlassian Suite, Azure DevOps, or Power Automate
- Experience leading AI adoption programs or internal AI education initiatives.
- Background in data visualization, automation, and API design.
- Understanding of AI ethics, data governance, and responsible AI practices.
- Industry experience in aerospace, diagnostics, or high-tech manufacturing environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy, precision, and quality in measurement processes and results.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply scientific principles to address complex challenges in aerospace, Spatial
- Computing, and adhesive technology.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and a proactive approach to driving continuous improvement and innovation in measurement science and technology.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with aircraft structure is preferred.
- Excellent analytical skills and a passion for innovation in measurement science.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Planner.
- Ability to read and work with 3D CAD data, metrology software, and engineering test plans is required.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
- B.S. in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline (required).
- Additional coursework or certifications in AI/ML, Cloud Architecture, or Data Science (preferred).
- This is not a supervisory position.
- The work is primarily sedentary, although there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items, such as paper or books, weighing less than 10 pounds.
