The Controller leads the financial operations of a vertically integrated construction and development company. This role oversees accounting systems, job cost tracking, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and lender/project funding coordination. The Controller plays a key role in supporting executive decision-making, improving financial clarity, and ensuring projects are completed profitably and responsibly.

The Controller leads the financial operations of a vertically integrated construction and development company. This role oversees accounting systems, job cost tracking, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and lender/project funding coordination. The Controller plays a key role in supporting executive decision-making, improving financial clarity, and ensuring projects are completed profitably and responsibly.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee AR/AP, payroll, general ledger, job costing, and multi-entity reporting
- Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Track job profitability, cost-to-complete projections, and cash-flow forecasts
- Maintain banking, loan compliance, and audit documentation
- Lead tax, audit, insurance, and lender/owner draw reporting
- Develop and manage corporate and project budgets
- Prepare pro-formas and financial models for custom homes, multifamily, commercial, and land/community developments
- Forecast revenue, expenses, and cash needs based on build schedule and market conditions
- Oversee draw requests, lien waivers, retainage, and progress billings
- Ensure accurate labor, material, subcontract, and overhead cost allocation
- Support accounting for land acquisition, infrastructure, vertical construction phases, and developer entities
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, controls, and workflows
- Supervise and mentor internal and/or outsourced accounting teams
- Implement improvements in software, reporting, automation, and process efficiency
- Serve as a strategic financial partner to ownership, PMs, investors, and lenders
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA/CMA strongly preferred)
- 5 to 7 or more years of accounting experience; 3 or more years in construction or development required
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and cost-to-complete methods
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and experience with Buildertrend, Sage, Viewpoint, or similar
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
- Effective communicator with leadership presence and strong organizational discipline
- Full-time, W-2 Employee.
- Pay: $65,000 to $85,000+ annually, based on experience.
