Fort Hood, TX Full-Time | On-site | Position Contingent Upon Award
We're seeking a skilled and mission-driven Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support the maintenance and sustainment of the Abrams family of vehicles. In this hands-on role, you'll diagnose, repair, and maintain tracked combat vehicles with an emphasis on automotive and turbine engine systems. You'll also operate cranes and specialized tools to ensure operational readiness for U.S. and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) missions.

We're seeking a skilled and mission-driven Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support the maintenance and sustainment of the Abrams family of vehicles. In this hands-on role, you'll diagnose, repair, and maintain tracked combat vehicles with an emphasis on automotive and turbine engine systems. You'll also operate cranes and specialized tools to ensure operational readiness for U.S. and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) missions.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose malfunctions and perform repairs on tracked combat vehicles and subsystems.
- Maintain and overhaul powertrains, transmissions, suspension systems, and turbine engines.
- Dismantle, reassemble, and test engines and components using hoists and precision tools.
- Inspect components for wear and damage using micrometers, gauges, and diagnostic tools.
- Replace or repair defective parts, including engines and major subassemblies.
- Conduct post-repair functional testing to validate equipment performance.
- Support fielding logistics by directing maintenance activities and technical inspections.
- Operate cranes up to 35 tons to support vehicle maintenance and parts handling.
- Apply knowledge of military fielding processes and maintenance standards.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Must successfully complete a government suitability determination prior to employment.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in tracked combat vehicle maintenance, including Abrams systems.
- Experience with military automotive or turbine engine systems.
- Skilled in the use of hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and hoisting systems.
- Familiar with DoD maintenance procedures, technical manuals (TM), and fielding protocols.
- Ability to interpret schematics and maintenance documentation.
- Crane license (certified to operate up to 35-ton capacity).
- OSHA-compliant safety training preferred.
- Valid state-issued driver's license; CDL a plus.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in tracked combat vehicle maintenance, or
- 3+ years supervising military automotive/turbine maintenance, or
- 2+ years supervising vehicle maintenance operations.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Additional vocational or military technical training preferred.
- Heavy work: must be able to lift/move equipment exceeding 50 lbs.
- Frequent climbing, crawling, lifting, and use of hoists and cranes.
- Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and outdoor elements.
- Prior experience supporting Abrams sustainment or fielding.
- Familiarity with U.S. Army logistics support systems and field-level maintenance.
- Background working on FMS programs or with TACOM contracts.
