The Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) is seeking a Water Laboratory Technician (WQT) to join our Water Quality & Protection Team. This position is responsible for compliance sample collection as well as microbiological and basic wet chemical analysis at EWEB’s water quality laboratory located at the Hayden Bridge Treatment Plant in Springfield. The WQT will work in a collaborative laboratory environment that processes samples for drinking water compliance and source water protection. This position helps monitor EWEB’s water distribution system to make sure we consistently deliver high quality water to our customers. The successful candidate’s work will combine field sample collection, laboratory work, and customer service. They will spend one to three days a week in the field collecting compliance samples on specified routes. The remainder of the time will be spent in an ORELAP-accredited laboratory processing those and other water quality samples for microbiology and wet chemistry samples as well as interacting with laboratory and EWEB water customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collecting water samples from EWEB’s water distribution system.
  • Processing water quality samples for microbiological and basic wet chemical analysis in EWEB’s water quality laboratory.
  • Assisting laboratory customers and answering questions from EWEB water customers around water quality.
  • Following all laboratory standards operating procedures (SOP’s) and quality assurance and quality control procedures (QA/QC).
  • Calibrating laboratory and field equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Regularly using the laboratory’s laboratory management system (LIMS).

What You’ll Bring

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in a drinking water laboratory preferred. Equivalent experience in laboratories that process water samples, microbiological samples and/or chemistry samples may be qualifying.
  • An Associate’s degree or higher in Laboratory Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or other related field.
  • Ability to work independently, with good time management and close attention to detail.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), word processing, spreadsheet, and database management programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to a wide variety of audience and have good customer service skills.

Location: This is an onsite position at the Hayden Bridge Water Filtration Plant in Springfield and will also collect water samples from field locations.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm.

Compensation & Benefits

The wage scale for the Laboratory Specialist is $32.5578 per hour - $38.3032 per hour. The successful candidate will be placed at the appropriate step level and corresponding wage, based on previous experience, training, and knowledge.

This position is subject to the terms, conditions, and benefits of EWEB's collective bargaining agreement with IBEW Local 659, which includes an overtime rate of 2x the regular wage for all overtime worked and an annual HRA VEBA contribution of $3000/year paid by EWEB.
