Job Summary
As a Trainmaster, you'll play a key leadership role in guiding employees across the assigned territory. You’ll be responsible for overseeing both the operational and administrative aspects of the department, ensuring everything runs smoothly safely and efficiently.
This position is more than just managing schedules and logistics — it’s about building a strong team, fostering growth, and creating a positive work environment. You’ll be hands-on in interviewing, hiring, and training new team members, while also supporting their development through performance reviews, coaching, and recognition. Responsibilities
- Manage the safety performance, operating practices, and financial productivity of the operation
- Interface with customers and interchange partners, monitor the quality of service in accordance with contractual terms, and quickly resolve issues or delays.
- Communicate and coordinate with peer managers in all other departments.
- Assist in railcar-switching function as necessary to maintain operations
- Directly supervise train crew employees
- Manage schedules and payroll staying within the targeted budget
- Conduct and document efficiency/operational tests according to company and federal rules, regulations, policies and practices.
- Respond to and investigate accidents / incidents (derailments, personal injury, etc.), prepare associated reports and provide proper notification
- Partner with the General Manager and Human Resources on hiring and employee relations according to policies when necessary
- Coach and train employees in operating practices according to federal regulations and company policies
- Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
- Full-time (40 plus hours weekly)
- Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call
- Must be available to take calls and report outside of normal business hours on short notice to handle emergencies or situations related to maintaining fluid railroad operations
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Walking long distances on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditions
- Able to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist and carry short distances
- Able to squat, bend and lift overhead
- Have good balance and coordination
- Must meet vision requirements (including color)
- 5+ years of work experience in the railroad industry, with supervisory duties; 7+ years of experience in the railroad industry preferred
- Certified as a Locomotive Engineer or Conductor is a plus
- Knowledge and understanding of FRA regulations
- Effective communication skills both written and verbal
- Effective computer skills (Microsoft Office, applications, reporting, etc.)
- Experience working in a safety-sensitive work environment
- Possess situational awareness and decision-making abilities to respond effectively in a safety sensitive environment
- Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of high school diploma / GED and experience
- Valid driver’s license
- At least 18 years of age
- Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
- Subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening
- Background screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving history
