Work Schedule: 24/7 operation; rotating 8-10, or 12-hour day, evening, and night shifts. Typical shifts may include 0600–1800, 1500–2300, 2200–0600, or 1800–0600.

Weekend and holiday shifts required. Not to exceed 80 hours in a two-week pay period.


Coverage: Variable; assigned on an as-needed basis to cover emergent or extended shifts to maintain patient safety and mission continuity. Estimated 200 total hours annually across the Paramedic staff.


Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited Paramedic program that meets National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) standards. Equivalent education substitutions are not permitted for this position.

Experience

  • Minimum of 12 months of experience as a Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) after graduation.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in advanced life support (ALS), interfacility transport, and emergency care for critically ill and trauma patients in hospital or pre-hospital settings.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment preferred.

License/Certification

  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification as a Paramedic (NRP) or State of Virginia Paramedic license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (AHA or ARC).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (AHA or ARC).

Other Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Valid driver’s license and completion of an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or equivalent required for ambulance operation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Paramedic on a Specialty Care Team (SCT) to provide advanced, critical, and emergency care to adult, pediatric, surgical, and medical patients during transport or in-hospital emergencies.
  • Perform advanced airway management, including endotracheal intubation, Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI), and cricothyrotomy when indicated.
  • Administer medications via multiple routes (IV, IO, IM, subcutaneous, oral, rectal) and manage blood transfusions under approved medical protocols.
  • Initiate and interpret 12- and 15-lead ECGs, defibrillation, cardioversion, and pacing as appropriate.
  • Perform advanced trauma care, including hemorrhage control, spinal immobilization, and fracture management.
  • Conduct interfacility and intra-facility transports of critically ill or injured patients to higher levels of care.
  • Operate specialized medical transport equipment, including ventilators, defibrillators, oxygen systems, IV pumps, and rapid infusers.
  • Continuously assess and document patient condition, interventions, and outcomes using approved electronic systems (MHS GENESIS, DMHRSi, Zoll emsCharts).
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff regarding patient condition and treatment provided during transport or in the field.
  • Assist the Transfer Center in coordinating emergency and routine transfers, verifying facility acceptance, arranging transport logistics, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Provide detailed verbal and written patient reports to receiving facilities.
  • Operate emergency vehicles safely and in compliance with all regulations; perform pre- and post-operation inspections and ensure all vehicle and medical equipment are stocked and functional.
  • Participate in quality assurance, training, and safety programs as directed by the Transport Team Medical Director.
  • Support mass casualty, disaster response, and surge operations as assigned.
