Description

General Responsibilities:

Astemo Americas, Inc is looking for an experienced Engineer to join our Chassis Development and Vehicle Dynamics Team. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for designing, planning, testing, and coordinating multiple processes of simulations of product development used in product design for new and current products related to shock-absorber business and other business units that the group supports. The focus of the know-how is Full Vehicle Simulation applied to Ride & Comfort development tied to passive and semi-active damper technologies and application and development of control logic for semi-active damper technologies on virtual environment. This position requires experience with vehicle dynamics, vehicle testing, data analysis, test method development and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL). In addition, this position will be to coordinate all product development activities between OEM customers and responsible departments within the Astemo.

Job Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Calculation processing and correlation (20%)
    • Coordination of the procedure concerning targets and methods.
    • Involvement in the development of calculation standards and practical application.
    • Conduct CAE correlation, supporting measurements setup and creating correlation reports.
    • Models build and preparation.
  • Translate customer requirements into simulation inputs (5%)
    • Determination of customer requirements with regards to Vehicle Dynamics modelling and review of specifications.
    • Processing of calculations of sub-systems and components according to customer requirements considering internal guidelines.
  • Preparation and evaluation design (10%)
    • Preparation of alternatives and improvements to the relevant design levels.
    • Evaluation of design proposals and support with regards to the development of test concepts.
    • Involvement in correlations between calculation and test results.
  • Support programs in terms of CAE Full Vehicle analysis and damper modelling (15%)
    • Support programs and RFQs CAE tasks and checks their results.
    • Support programs and demo car virtual tuning activities.

  • Simulator operation (15%)
    • Preparation of the Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulator for evaluations.
    • DiL simulator operation during virtual tuning and evaluations.
    • Integration of DiL simulator with HiL systems.
  • Damper preparation, testing and modelling (10%)
    • Building and testing take-apart dampers to support customer tuning activity and lab testing.
    • Run damper testing using various types of damper dynos.
    • Post-process data to prepare virtual damper models.

  • Documentation (5%)
    • Documentation of calculation results for design levels as CAE reports according to the released standard.
    • Creation, provision and administration of technical documentation.
  • Controls logic development (20%)
    • Application of control logic on virtual development
    • Control logic simulation and support for in house tuning using simulation tools.
    • Development of new control logic on virtual environment and support deployment on demo vehicles
Other Responsibilities

  • Exhibits superior knowledge and execution of damper / ride development performance metrics, both Astemo internal processes and customer processes.
  • Develop strong working relationships with customers, conveying both professionalism and strong product knowledge.
  • Directs the efforts of support technicians when conducting ride work at customer locations.
  • Gather/analyse objective application data from lab and vehicle testing to support testing/tuning/evaluation.
  • Lead or support efforts to develop/improve test and tuning processes, procedures, supporting tools, and documentation.
  • Operate computer-controlled test equipment and data acquisition systems.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills required.
  • Lead or participate in creative brainstorming sessions to solve technical challenges.
  • Maintains accurate damper change logs and tuning reports during every step of the tuning process using the correct terminology. Organize information systematically and separately for each program.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study with 5+ years of vehicle simulation or vehicle dynamics experience, or both.
  • Understanding of the relation between shock performance and vehicle dynamics.
  • Knowledge of shock fundamentals, concepts, and performance.
  • Expert knowledge of vehicle dynamics and objective/subjective vehicle evaluation
  • Knowledge of control systems from the hardware, software, and algorithm standpoint
  • Understanding of analog and digital hardware systems as applied to automotive control systems.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Proficient in data acquisition systems, sensors, and analysis software.
  • Knowledge on CANape, CANalyzer, Git, Ethernet, ECU, CAN, CANFD, GPS, OBD, MicroAutoBox.
  • Knowledge on Coding.
  • Understanding of suspensions’ Kinematics & Compliances.
  • Experience with VI-Grade CarRealTime (preferred) or other vehicle dynamics simulation tools is required.
  • Experience on Control Logic for Semi-Active dampers
  • Proficient knowledge on MATLAB or other 1D simulation tools.
  • Experience with AI tools.
  • CAD software experience is a plus.
  • Must be highly detail oriented and organized, and able to apply work methods to maximize efficiency and minimize errors.
  • Experience on interface calculation and modelling.
  • Experience in Driver-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop systems operation will be a bonus.
  • Experience with product development inside OEM or a Tier1 is a perk.
  • Ability and desire to learn new skills quickly and apply them to daily work.
  • Valid driving license and reliable transportation.
  • Able to work effectively and accurately amidst distractions.
  • Excellent work ethics and teamwork skills.
  • Hands-on and self-motivated.

Additionally, the ability to work independently with minimal direction is required as are strong/effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to travel and support activities and coordination at the global level is required. Availability for occasional meetings outside of core business hours with other global Astemo and OEM sites.

Education: Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Master’s degree is preferable

Experience: 5+ years’ applicable experience in related field (CAE), would consider less experience with a Master’s degree.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Have ability to work 40 – 60 hours per week.

Travel: Domestic and international may be required as needed.
