Bank of Marin, voted by our employees as one of the "Best Places to Work" in the North Bay Business Journal, is looking for a Senior Trust Officer to join our Wealth Management and Trust team at our corporate office in our Sacramento Area


The Senior Trust Officer will be responsible for maintaining relationships with clients and beneficiaries where the Bank has been retained to serve as Trustee. Independently perform the administration of trust accounts as assigned, and perform duties as directed by the governing document and current pertinent law. The Senior Trust Officer will generate and close acceptable new business opportunities, with responsibility for achievement of assigned business development goals. Responsibilities will include management of accounts which do not involve a trust (investment management agency). In addition, the Senior Trust Officer will also be responsible for various operational and marketing/business development tasks. As the Senior Trust Officer this position would be expected to provide guidance to Client Service Associate(s) and the Trust Officer(s).


Essential Job Functions:

  • Senior Trust Officer (STO), will be expected to perform the duties described herein with 
  • minimal supervision: Manage trust relationships including the opening, administering and closing of trust accounts. 
  • Independently prepare for and conduct new business meetings with prospective clients.
  • Review and interpret the terms of governing documents and carry out such terms in accordance with state, local and federal laws.
  • Prepare distribution plans and evaluate discretionary distribution requests against the trust document, applicable laws, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain professional rapport and working relationship with trust beneficiaries, clients, and COIs as needed to sustain account relationships.  
  • Complete all regulatory reporting required of trust accounts including administrative and Reg 9 reviews.
  • Collaborate with COIs and other professionals, including estate planning attorneys, CPAs, and investment managers, to develop new business opportunities and in furtherance of current clients’ estate, tax, or succession planning goals.
  • Proficient in asset allocations, investment vehicles, and modern portfolio theory.
  • Possess a basic understanding of individual & fiduciary tax laws.
  • Understand fiduciary accounting principles including the UPAIA.
  • Engage with COIs in the community to increase knowledge of the Bank which may include such activities as joining relevant professional organizations and volunteering at local non-profits.
  • Identify and report to management potential risks to the department and assist in risk mitigation. 
  • May directly supervise other trust officers and client services officers.


Job Skill Level / Additional Requirements:

  • Proficiency dealing independently with clients while providing service or resolving service problems.  
  • Thorough understanding of trust, taxation and probate laws.   
  • Understanding concepts of modern portfolio theory, asset allocation, risk tolerance, time horizon and other concepts relative to establishing Investment Policies for clients’ situations.  
  • Able to prioritize work.   
  • Able to credibly interact with other professionals (eg., attorney's and CPA's).   
  • Experience with trust accounting and accounting programs/software.  
  • Ability to draft original correspondence.  
  • Advanced skill level in Word and Excel. Intermediate PowerPoint skills.   
  • Self-starter requiring minimal supervision.   
  • JD, CTFA, AEP or similar designation preferred.


Professional / Educational Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required. JD, CTFA, AEP or similar designation preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience, in the area of trust administration with a demonstrated track record of skills and abilities.


The hiring pay range for this position is $113,187 to $158,462. In addition to the pay range listed, all bank positions are eligible for incentive compensation, which varies based on role. The pay rate for a successful applicant depends on a variety of factors including but not limited to geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
