Salary Range: $105,417 - $119,275 annualized
The Town of Brookline is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Assistant Director for Operations to support the Director of Public Health and Human Services in overseeing the operational, administrative, and facilities functions of the Department. This senior management role is critical to ensuring efficient internal operations, effective service delivery, and strong coordination across municipal departments and external partners.
Reporting directly to the Director, the Assistant Director for Operations exercises independent judgment and initiative in managing daily departmental operations, supervising staff, administering budgets and grants, and ensuring compliance with applicable public health, municipal, and data privacy regulations. The Town of Brookline is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Assistant Director for Operations to support the Director of Public Health and Human Services in overseeing the operational, administrative, and facilities functions of the Department. This senior management role is critical to ensuring efficient internal operations, effective service delivery, and strong coordination across municipal departments and external partners.
Reporting directly to the Director, the Assistant Director for Operations exercises independent judgment and initiative in managing daily departmental operations, supervising staff, administering budgets and grants, and ensuring compliance with applicable public health, municipal, and data privacy regulations. The position plays a key role in strategic planning, staff management, facilities oversight, and continuous improvement of departmental systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Director in establishing departmental goals, strategic priorities, and operational policies aligned with the Department’s mission.
- Provide day-to-day oversight of the Health Center facility, including coordination of maintenance, renovations, and operational needs.
- Supervise and coordinate clerical and administrative operations, including direct supervision of three or more full-time and/or part-time employees.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluations, professional development, and offboarding of staff and interns.
- Serve as a liaison between the Department and Human Resources on personnel matters, including performance improvement plans.
- Contribute to departmental budget development and monitoring; oversee procurement, payroll processing, and financial reporting functions.
- Support grant development, administration, compliance, and outcome reporting.
- Maintain accurate public health records and prepare required monthly and annual reports.
- Ensure compliance with data security, confidentiality, HIPAA, public records law, and other regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate extensively with other municipal departments, boards, committees, neighboring municipalities, and external agencies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in operations management, administration, or public service; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Supervisory experience and experience working directly with the public are highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of municipal operations, public administration, budgeting, procurement, and records management.
- Familiarity with public health programs and regulations, grant administration, facilities operations, and data privacy requirements.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency with systems such as MUNIS, ACCELA, and Microsoft Office; multilingual skills are a plus.
