Description

Incorporated in 1955 and encompassing more than 454 acres, the Mt. Prospect Park District provides outstanding recreational programs, events, parks, facilities and services. With seven primary facilities and 27 neighborhood parks, the Park District is an integral part of a thriving multi-generational community. District open space includes two outdoor pools, biking and walking paths, a dog park and sizable space for outdoor athletic programming. The District covers over 11 square miles and serves a region of over a quarter million residents in Mount Prospect and surrounding communities.

We are searching for part-time Swim Lesson Instructors. Additional hours may be available during the outdoor pool season to work as a Cashier. We are willing to train energetic and reliable people with an interest in Aquatics! When working as a Swim Lesson Instructor, will be responsible for conducting swimming lessons for children and/or adults. When working as a Cashier, also responsible for the professional, safe, and orderly operation of the pool admissions counter and service areas, including accurately entering and collecting daily admissions, checking and entering all pool passes, answering the phone, acting as slide attendant, assisting our guests, and engaging in light housekeeping as assigned.

Candidates must be at least 15 years old to work as a Swim Lesson Instructor (with the ability to obtain a work permit, if under 16 years old) and must be at least 16 years old to work as a Cashier. The Swim Lesson Instructor/Cashier must also be able to successfully pass a criminal background check. The pay rate for non-certified Swim Lesson Instructors teaching swim lessons is $16.00 per hour. The non-certified rate when training for the non-certified Swim Lesson Instructor position is $15.00 per hour. The cashier rate is $15 per hour. District employees also receive facility privileges and discounts.

Requirements

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Prevent accidents by enforcing pool rules and maintaining discipline.

Assist in the opening and/or closing procedures of the facility.

Maintain a clean and organized work environment. Perform basic maintenance and light housekeeping in the pool area and locker rooms to ensure a safe and clean environment.

Report any irregular discipline, safety, or maintenance problems to the Pool Manager.

Assist with emergency procedures. Perform first aid techniques and CPR procedures as necessary.

Attend required training and meetings. Participate in rescue drills, first aid reviews, instructional clinics and other skill development activities.

Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, employee handbook, and work safety rules. Prevent accidents by maintaining discipline and enforcing agency, departmental and state health rules, policies, and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES-Swim Lesson Instructor

Teach swim classes in accordance with the Park District’s instructional swimming program.

Assist in developing and implementing lesson plans appropriate to program level and participant’s abilities.

Correctly explain and demonstrate each water skill for students.

Provide students with proper feedback and correction on their performance and offer suggestions for improvement when needed.

Maintain accurate records including attendance, skill sheets, and report cards.

Ensure that class environment, facilities, materials and equipment are organized to enhance individual/group performance and minimize distractions during the lesson period.

Evaluate students’ progress, correct problems as needed and report on student’s progress to parents.

Recognize and respond to emergencies and assist with emergency procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES-Cashier

Welcome and assist the guests that come to use the facility.

Check and enter all pool passes. Accurately enter and collect daily admissions. Make change correctly for cash transactions.

Complete transactions using a variety of payment methods including cash, check, bank cards, gift certificates, traveler's checks and household credits.

Accurately closeout and balance batch at the end of each shift. Complete reports as required for over and under balances.

Maintain records of daily attendance and problem pool passes on forms provided.

Maintain the cash bank in the register and inform the manager if additional change is needed.

Perform drop slide dispatch duties as outlined in the Pool Operations Manual.

Secondary Duties

Additional functions as assigned which may be considered essential.

All other duties as assigned by the on-duty Pool Manager, Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Manager, Superintendent of Recreation, Director of Recreation, and/or the Executive Director. However, in an emergency, perform all other duties as required.

Qualifications

Must be a current high school student, high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.

CPR (Infant, Child and Adult), AED and First Aid Certification is a plus.

Must be at least 15 years old when working as a Swim Lesson Instructor. Must be at least 16 years old when working as a Cashier.

Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time as well as be able to walk around the pool facilities.

Must be able to communicate effectively with others for safety purposes and to allow for coordination of work. Must be able to effectively communicate with Park District patrons and coworkers.

Must be able to recognize unsafe conditions and respond accordingly. Must be able to quickly respond to emergency situations while understanding procedures and policies.

Must be able to count and correctly complete monetary transactions.

Must be able to lift 30+ pounds. Must be able to perform tasks that require walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting and reaching. Must be able to enter the pool at any given time.

Will be exposed to indoor and outdoor conditions including pool water, high humidity, sun, rain, and warm and cold temperatures.

Due to the needs of the Park District, evening and weekend hours may be required. Your work schedule may vary and your workweek may exceed regular hours at times, but will be less than 1,000 hours per year. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function of the Swim Lesson Instructor position.
