Job Description: Routesetters at The Spot are primarily responsible for the creation and production of high quality commercial boulder problems and routes. The Spot’s unique flavor of Routesetting encourages a creative mindset and seeks staff who are looking to progress and continually develop their craft. Events and competitions are a large part of Spot culture, and as such setting staff will be asked to curate comp style boulders, work occasional long days, be a team player and actively participate in the Spot community.

Pay Range

$20.00-$22.00/hr for boulder setting

$21.50-$22.50/hr for rope setting

Position Responsibilities

  • Execute all necessary route setting activities to maintain the highest possible level of quality, grading, consistency, turnover, and innovation with the route setting product
  • Continually strive to improve our product and to establish the gym as an industry leader through our route setting
  • Continually strive to improve personal setting skills
  • Conduct all setting activities with attention and regard to the risk mitigation of the setting environment and product output for maximum possible client enjoyment
  • Deliver world-class routes for all users from beginners and recreational climbers to elite climbing athletes
  • Maintain the equipment and supplies for setting; communicate with Setting Leads and Route Setting Manager when new equipment is needed
  • Work with the Setting Leads and Route Setting Manager to improve the efficiency and performance of the department as a whole
  • Adequately maintain the equipment, holds, and gym areas while mitigating risk for themselves, coworkers and members
  • Take direction from the Setting Leads to perform setting support or logistical activities
    • These tasks include but aren’t limited to: hold stripping, hold cleaning and organization, route taping, setting area cleanup, setting shop organization, tapping t-nuts, etc
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions and meetings as directed
  • Work as part of the setting team to provide a well rounded product for customers to enjoy. Take direction and set what is needed in a given day to round out the spread for the zone and the gym as a whole
  • Forerun with the team to help maintain the highest quality product. Provide constructive feedback for any and all problems/routes
  • Ability to manage your time clock appropriately
Qualifications

  • 2+ years commercial route setting experience
  • Experience in the indoor climbing gym industry
  • Rounded indoor/outdoor climbing experience
  • Ability to forerun v5/5.12 comfortably
  • Basic understanding of movement and athletic empathy
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work occasional long days and off hours
  • Ability to work long hours working a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding job
  • Background check required
  • Must be able to independently follow written and verbal instructions
  • Must be able to cheerfully and professionally communicate with members of the public
  • Must be able to attend all scheduled or assigned shifts
  • Must be able to comply with all industry and facility safety standards
  • USAC qualifications preferred

Reports/logs To Be Delivered To Direct Supervisor

  • Annual, supervisor, and business feedback and review

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Proficiency in using power tools like impact drivers and angle grinders.
  • The ability to stand for extended periods during practices (often 3 or more hours) and demonstrations.
  • Climbing and balancing
  • Must be able to frequently work at heights, often up to 40 feet with fall protection or up to 20 feet using a ladder.
  • Continuous crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and climbing
  • Continuous repetitive hand and arm movements, finger dexterity.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly.
  • Exposure to airborne chalk dust
  • Standing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, and repeated use of hand and wrist muscles.
