Job Description
The position of Sterile Proc Tech 1 is responsible for the coordination, preparation, and delivery of hospital instrumentation and equipment. The Prep Technician also assists with the decontamination and delivery of hospital equipment and surgical instrumentation are properly cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized after each use. The Gastro Assistant is also responsible for assisting with the admission, transfer and discharge processes.

Responsibilities
- TECHNICAL TASKS
- Maintains workstation and Prep/ Decontam areas in a neat, orderly, and efficient manner at all times.
- Ensures the cleanliness of all instruments processed by inspection and adherence to all nationally recognized infection control standards with special attention given to crevices, box locks, cannulas, and other aspects necessary per instrument.
- Assists other departments and personnel in acquiring instrumentation/equipment.
- Demonstrates a complete understanding of Prep / Decontam policies and procedures.
- Checks all instrument sets accurately per lists or policy.
- Removes and replaces all known defective instruments from sets and informs appropriate personnel. Correctly stores all sterile instruments at all times.
- Wraps and/or packages all instruments per standards to ensure integrity of package during sterilization. Correctly labels all instrument packages with ownership of instrument, type of instrument, by placing initials on wrapped package/set.
- Always places instrumentation/equipment in proper location in prep and in surgery areas.
- Operates and utilizes all necessary equipment according to manufacturers' instructions in the Prep and Decontam Areas
- Inspects instrument storage areas daily to maintain cleanliness and sterility of processed items, and ensure proper storage.
- Retrieves instrumentation from Surgery area and processes without delay to ensure availability of needed instruments.
- Assists in decontamination duties of all surgical instrumentation and SPD equipment. Follows without altering all Decontamination policies and procedures when working in that area.
- Demonstrates a consistent level of performance; maintains progress on special projects when other duties are complete.
- Dispenses instrumentation/equipment on time, accurately and in an efficient manner.
- Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy consistently; keeps up to date with all instrument lists. Always conveys accurate and timely information regarding instrumentation.
- CRITICAL THINKING
- Observes any area of the department in disrepair and reports to OR Manager; reports any unsafe area or equipment to the OR Manager
- Provides immediate response to Operating Room requests and all "STAT" (Emergency) requests.
- Regularly accepts additional work during slow periods; asks Prep Lead Tech what needs to be done.
- Assists other departmental employees by sharing pertinent information on new policies or procedures.
- Always consults with the supervisor, in an uncertain or unusual situation regarding procedures and policies.
- Consistently demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action. Shows good judgement through complete knowledge.
- Other duties as assigned.

- High School graduate or equivalent.
