ATI is seeking to hire a Process Development Engineer Intern for our Summer 2026 Internship Program. This position will be based in Millersburg, OR and will run from June to August 2026. Relocation and housing assistance is available for the summer.

The Product Development team works collaboratively to design and improve the manufacturing of challenging materials. Process Engineers lead problem solving and continuous improvement efforts with a variety of metal melting and forming processes towards improvement of quality, cycle time, yield and/or cost, and provide technical support to internal and external customers. Our efforts solve hard problems in medical, energy, aerospace, and defense markets with refractory metal alloys and material systems of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, V and Ni.
What You'll Do
The Process Development Engineer Intern will work collaboratively with the Process team to advance development projects from initiation to closure, including: 1) project definition, 2) experimentation & analysis, 3) formal reporting, and 4) presentation to broad, internal audiences. A typical project could improve a forging practice, formulate and melt a new refractory alloy, or develop a model of an annealing process. The ideal intern will possess attention to detail, good problem-solving skills, and strong interpersonal skills along with a desire to learn about industrial scale metallurgy of refractory metals and alloys.

The Process Development Engineer Intern Will

- Teach as well as learn: apply principles of science and engineering to explain the why— while solving real world industrial challenges.
- Work in cross-functional teams in industrial settings to continuously improve safety, quality and cost on refractory alloy mill products
- Must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Materials Engineering or a related field
- Materials, Mechanical, or Aero Engineering background, lab experience working with metals, powders, refractories, industrial metal working processes, modeling/simulation experience.
- A current graduate course of study in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related field is preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory and/or shop safety practice (e.g. previous work experience, in-person university experimental labs)
- Ability to analyze and present data-driven conclusions (e.g. using Excel, JMP, Python)
- Flexibility between working in a group setting as well as working comfortably with limited direct input
- Interest in fundamental metallurgy and applications of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, and Nb-based alloy systems
- Improving refractory coextrusion liner adhesion and thickness variation.
- refractory pressure vessel heat-treatment optimization.
- Grain Growth kinetics of refractories
- Press forge modeling
