Position Summary

In this role, you’ll be placed into our new product development group to apply what you’ve learned in school and participate in Banner’s continued growth in the industrial automation and machine safety market by helping to develop new safety products.

This position reports to Engineering Manager I.

Interns are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation for the summer internship program.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Perform qualification tests to ensure conformance to specifications
  • Resolve part and process issues by working with production engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers
  • Work with global suppliers on qualifying mechanical parts made from a variety of processes including injection molding, machining, metal-forming, and die casting
  • Develop concepts, then design and document components and assemblies following departmental processes
  • Design and acquire prototype parts for internal evaluation
  • Translate product specifications and requirements into effective product designs
  • Implement efficient and reliable manufacturing processes that allow for short lead times
  • Integrate design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) processes to reduce product cost
  • Evaluate designs through physical and virtual product testing including performing stress, thermal, and tolerance analyses
  • Manage product documentation including Bills of Materials (BOMs), design verification reports, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and process and design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs)
  • Adhere to compliance regulations established by various agencies (CE, UL, etc.)
  • Assist in the development and execution of product test plans
  • Other duties as assigned

Required

  • Currently attending an accredited institution working on a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. ABET accredited program preferred
  • A working knowledge of solid modeling tools. (Solidworks, Creo, etc.)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn advanced design and manufacturing techniques
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (i.e., creating graphs and charts, using formulas, and filtering information)
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while balancing priorities
  • Ability to learn quickly with minimal direction
  • Good communication skills, including oral and written communication

Preferred

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and statistical analysis
  • Experience in product design for industrial applications
  • Experience with part design requirements for various methods of manufacturing including injection molding, die casting, extruding, stamping, and die cutting.
  • Experience with a variety of assembly techniques including ultrasonic welding, insert molding, chip on board (COB), surface mount technology (SMT) and epoxy encapsulation
  • Available to work full time during the summer months with the possibility of working part time during the school year.

Pay Range: $20 - $28/hour depending on school year
