Job Summary
The University of Michigan School of Public Health Office of Development and Alumni Engagement is looking for a Major Gift Officer focused on engaging and discovering prospective donors in several assigned regions of the United States. As part of our energetic and engaging team, and in support of our ambitious "Look to Michigan" campaign, you will be charged with managing relationships and securing support from individuals who are capable of making major and planned gifts of $50,000 or more.
The Major Gifts Officer will develop and manage a personal portfolio of 125 prospects and donors, as well as develop and execute a strategic plan for major gift fundraising in assigned region(s). This position will work closely with the Chief Development Officer, Senior Major Gifts Officer, the Dean, Chairs, faculty, volunteers, and University-wide development colleagues to achieve positive outcomes. This position will need to exercise good judgment and work with a high degree of discretion, and confidentiality is required.
Responsibilities*
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
Hybrid: Team members are expected to be on-site 2-3 days per week, with travel days counting toward this requirement.

Intermediate: $75,731 - $93,550
Associate: $ 59,245-$73,185

Responsibilities*
- Maintain and strengthen a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan to generate philanthropic support from donors capable of contributing $50,000 or above from assigned regions, to include West Michigan, the Midwest, and parts of the Southwest United States. The multi-year plan will consist of systematic, appropriate, and effective identification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for both major and planned gift prospects
- Work collaboratively with other development colleagues across campus and the U-M Office of University Development (OUD) to identify and establish a strategy for donors with multi-unit interests.
- Implement strategies to identify and qualify new prospects to build the donor pipeline through effective and active discovery continually.
- Maintain accurate and current records and document activity in the University's donor database
- Plan and direct School of Public Health development programs and activities, including dinners, receptions, and visits by the dean, associate deans, department chairs, and faculty in the assigned region.
- Bachelor's degree (graduate degree preferred)
- 1-3 years ( Associate Level), 3-5 years ( Intermediate Level) of experience in successful fundraising, especially in direct personal solicitation programs, or other related fields
- Strong communication skills, especially in the preparation of written communications, and knowledge of database management and personal computers
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Business travel is estimated to be 30-40%. Work may include some evenings and weekends, and the ability to adjust schedule to meet donor needs and conduct business.
- Knowledge of charitable giving laws and practices
