Job Title: SolidWorks 3D Control Panel Designer
This role focuses on designing sheet metal control panel enclosures and the electrical controls inside them using SolidWorks in both 3D and 2D. You will support a growing control panel business that is experiencing a steady influx of new orders, contributing directly to the design and documentation of panels manufactured at multiple facilities while working on-site in Sterling Heights.
Responsibilities
- Design sheet metal control panel enclosures and internal electrical controls using SolidWorks 3D.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models of control panels to meet customer and manufacturing requirements.
- Develop accurate 2D manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks based on 3D models.
- Maintain and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) for control panel designs.
- Prepare and manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and ensure changes are accurately reflected in all documentation.
- Create, organize, and maintain technical documentation associated with control panel designs.
- Collaborate closely with the lead designer and other team members to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet project specifications.
- Support projects for data center and related applications by delivering high-quality panel designs on schedule.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to clarify design requirements and resolve design issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and processes within the panel design group.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 3+ years of SolidWorks 3D design experience.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience developing 2D manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs), Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), and technical documentation.
- 3+ years of experience in controls panel design or sheet metal design.
- Hands-on experience designing control panel layouts and components in a 3D environment.
- Experience creating and interpreting detailed 2D drawings for fabrication and assembly.
- Previous experience maintaining and organizing BOMs for complex assemblies.
- Familiarity with electrical concepts such as controls, circuits, voltage, and wiring from prior work or educational background.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for both 3D modeling and 2D detailing.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in design and documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based, interactive environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is preferred.
- Experience specifically in control panel design for industrial or data center applications is an advantage.
- Ability to manage multiple design tasks and adapt to changing project priorities.
- Strong communication skills to work effectively with a lead designer and broader project teams.
- Interest in professional growth into broader project responsibilities or leadership roles.
- Comfort working across different types of projects and supporting areas outside of controls when needed.
Work Environment
You will work on-site at the Sterling Heights facility in a casual office environment with individual cubicles and a highly interactive, communicative culture. The role is primarily desk-based, focused on panel design work in SolidWorks. You will collaborate closely with a small team, including a lead designer, in a team-based setting where colleagues support each other and step in to help on various projects as needed. Panels are manufactured at both the Sterling Heights and Pennsylvania locations, though travel is not expected and would only rarely be required. The business has a steady flow of work, particularly in panel design and service for applications such as data centers, offering strong growth opportunities and the chance to develop into a well-rounded professional and future project leader.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $38.00/hr.
