Basic Function
Moreno Valley College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty colleague responsible for instruction in all aspects of the English program by regularly teaching Umoja English courses and co-coordinating the Umoja program. The ideal candidate will share Moreno Valley College's and the District English discipline's commitment to educating its racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population. Moreno Valley College currently enrolls 13,668 students, of whom 67.8% identify as "Hispanic," 9.4% as "African American," 5.9% as "Asian," 3.9% as "Two or More," and 11.6% as "White." 57.2% of students self-identify as "Female," while 41.7% identify as "Male;" the remaining 1.2% self-identify as "Non-binary" or do not report. Moreno Valley College has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. Successful candidates are expected to teach English composition, directly addressing equity and student achievement in all classes.
The successful candidate will teach and co-coordinate the Umoja Program as part of a learning community team with a counseling faculty member, ideally in a rotation. The Umoja Program is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American diasporas.
The successful candidate will be a well-rounded faculty member primarily responsible for lecture and laboratory instruction in Academic Reading and Writing (ENGL C1000) and Critical Thinking and Writing through Literature (ENGL C1003) courses in a variety of modalities, including instruction in the writing process and critical thinking skills. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach a variety of introductory literature courses.
Education
Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR the equivalent.

Experience
We are looking for candidates who have recent experience working with African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native American, and other racially/ ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom; who have an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education; who demonstrate a willingness to examine and adapt their instructional practices to engage and support more effectively various groups of students; who have experience and skill addressing issues of equity in the classroom; who embrace culturally responsive and sustaining teaching practices and policies; who demonstrate ability to address equity gaps.
Experience teaching college-level composition with knowledge and experience using a diverse canon and culturally responsive teaching is required. Two years of teaching English composition/literature to underrepresented and diverse student populations at a community college or baccalaureate level institution is desired.
We are especially interested in candidates interested in working with energized colleagues eager to address educational inequities through continual instructional and programmatic improvement to reduce and eventually eliminate the institutional and pedagogical barriers causing disproportionate gaps in success for students traditionally impacted by institutionalized racism, especially those with direct experience teaching African American students.
Thus, the ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and practices for engaging our minoritized student population; will create and develop curriculum; will work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and will fulfill the duties of a full- time faculty member in a participatory governance environment. Candidates with research expertise and/or past teaching excellence in African American rhetoric(s), literature, or discourse(s) is desired. The ideal candidate will have experience working with the Umoja Program or teaching Umoja English or experience with a similar program.

Duties And Responsibilities
- The instructional assignment will include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach English composition and literature courses in various platforms (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) as needed.
- Duties will include the co-coordination of the Umoja Program with the Umoja faculty counselor; co-coordination may include occasional evening and weekends, excursions, college visits, recruitment, and mandatory trainings and events. Coordination will also include the planning and implementation of other associated duties to ensure compliance with the state Umoja Community.
- All faculty will participate in outcomes assessment work.
- Assignments are based upon an assumed workload of forty hours weekly (42.5 hours in the compressed calendar), including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
- Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
- Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters are also expected of all department faculty.
- Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
Conditions Of Employment
- This is a long-term temporary, non-tenure track position for the 2026-2027 Academic Year. RCCD employees who have served in a long-term, temporary capacity within the last three years are not eligible to apply for this position.
- Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
- Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
- A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
- Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
- Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected.
- Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
NOTE: This is a long-term temporary, non-tenure track position only and will terminate after the end of the 2026-2027 Academic Year. There is no guarantee that this position will be funded after the 2026-2027 academic year.
