The Job in a Nutshell

Join a globally respected, industry-leading wine merchant as we build on our successful US launch. As a Wine Buyer with a focus on Commercial Merchandising, you will be instrumental in maintaining and curating a commercially viable wine portfolio for our Washington, DC retail store, our e-commerce platform, and our team of Private Client Advisors serving clients nationwide. This role is currently focused on sourcing high-quality wines through regional distributors and US-based importers.

Your commercial instincts, supplier network, and market awareness will be key to optimizing margins, securing allocations, ensuring product availability, and driving performance across all channels. This is a unique opportunity to shape a competitive, forward-looking portfolio with world-class wines.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a commercially sound wine portfolio.
  • Strengthen relationships with US wholesalers, regional distributors, and importers to secure wines aligned with regional preferences and pricing strategy.
  • Drive sales performance by selecting wines that align with consumer trends and client preferences across all channels.
  • Take clear ownership for buying products that can and will sell within an agreed time period, at the required margin, ensuring that every purchasing decision is commercially justified.
  • Collaborate with Commercial and Sales teams to identify gaps, react quickly to demand, and support new sales initiatives.
  • Oversee end-to-end buying activities, including price negotiation, allocation planning, PO processing, and stock optimization.
  • Maintain up-to-date market intelligence and pricing data to ensure competitiveness.
  • Support the commercial calendar, marketing initiatives, and product campaigns with timely and relevant selections.
  • Provide responsive purchasing support for ad-hoc client requests and stock replenishments.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain a strategically merchandised wine range to drive revenue and margin growth.
  • Be accountable for buying stock that delivers against agreed sell-through timeframes, stock turn expectations, and margin targets.
  • Meet individual targets for budget management, stock turnover, and margin performance.
  • Deliver seamless support to Private Client Advisors through expert product curation and inventory coordination.
  • Support operational excellence with accurate forecasting, stock availability, and fulfilment efficiency.

Your Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a wine buying or commercial merchandising role.
  • Proven ability to build and manage relationships with US wholesalers, distributors, and importers.
  • A strong understanding of the US market including the 3 tier system.
  • Strong knowledge of market pricing, cost structures, and inventory management.
  • WSET Diploma or equivalent wine qualification preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to interpret data for buying decisions.
