Brief Description

Job Objective

Reporting to the Director of Rehabilitation Services, assists in the coordination and daily workflow of the Rehabilitation Services Department. This is in addition to carrying out patient referrals under the general direction of the referring physician to support the Director of Rehabilitation Services and the Rehabilitation Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead Responsibilities
    • Assists in the day-to-day operations of the Physical Therapy Department.
    • Assists with departmental Performance Improvement activities.
    • Assists with coordination of daily staffing workflow and patient assignments as necessary. Attendance of assigned hospital meetings representing Rehabilitation Services.
    • Provides guidance, support, and feedback to staff and students and communicates operational concerns to the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
    • Assists the Director of Rehabilitation Services with the planning, establishing, implementation and monitoring of Physical Therapy related policies, procedures and performance standards.
    • Assists with monitoring staff scheduling and communicates attendance concerns to leadership as appropriate.
  • Provision of Patient Care
    • Performs Physical Therapy evaluations as ordered by a physician.
    • Based on the evaluation, develops treatment programs with appropriate treatment objectives which are mutually agreed upon by the patient.
    • Provides for the implementation of proper treatment programs through themselves or through supervision of a physical therapy assistant or aide.
    • Periodically evaluates the patient’s response to treatment and alters the program as appropriate with the physician’s approval.
    • Administers standard diagnostic or prognostic tests of muscle, nerve and joint for functional ability.
    • Performs therapy services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and Home Health patients as assigned.
  • Communication
    • Maintains appropriate patient records including the initial evaluation, daily treatment charting, progress reports, and discharge summary in the patient’s medical record.
    • Documentation on the Multidisciplinary Care Plan and Teaching Record.
    • Communicates effectively verbally and with written communications to referring physicians.
    • Provides timely and accurate billing information specific to patient interventions provided.
    • Maintains effective relationships with physicians, physicians’ offices, other departments within the hospital, coworkers and patients.
  • Administrative
    • Maintains patient and employee confidentiality.
    • Maintains adequate attendance and punctuality.
    • Participation in departmental staff meetings.
    • Demonstration of proper safety practices in the clinic and on the hospital floors.
    • Participation in the established weekend and holiday staffing rotations.
    • Participation in the Performance Improvement process in the Rehabilitation Services Department

Non-Essential Duties

  • Performance of housekeeping tasks in their work area.
  • Participation in patient education and forms development.
  • Participation in continuing education for patients, hospital employees or outside customers.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the theory, techniques and practices of accepted physical therapy treatments for geriatric, adult, adolescent and child patient populations.
  • Knowledge of the English language and possess good composition skills for the purposes of written communication.
  • Knowledge of Antelope Valley Hospital’s hospital information system (HIS).

Skills

  • Skilled in the administration of physical therapy treatments in the acute care, outpatient and home health care settings.
  • Skilled in the assessment of a patient’s progress on the basis of judgmental criteria and measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Excellent leadership, collaboration, and training skills.
  • Skilled in training of non-medical persons to assist with a patient’s home program/management.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and customer focus

Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively while maintaining good working relationships with coworkers, managers, hospital staff, physicians, patients and outside customers.
  • Ability to collect and interpret data.

Education and Experience

Education

  • Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited Physical Therapy Program

Experience

  • 2 years of acute care patient clinical experience with demonstrated leadership abilities is preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid license as a Registered Physical Therapist issued by the Board of Medical Examiners, State of California or eligible for license.
  • American Heart Association BLS CPR certification

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Position will require frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting and reaching.
  • Occasionally requires lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Potential exposure to radiation, chemicals and biohazard which will require use of PPE.
