The Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies seeks a full-time principal faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in the non-tenure stream with primary teaching responsibilities in the PA Studies On-Campus Program. This position requires the candidate to come to campus for teaching and other responsibilities and provides opportunities for a flexible work environment.

Job Description: Position Title: Assistant Professor / Principal Faculty

FTE: 1.0 FTE (Full-Time, 12-Month Appointment)

Essential Functions: Serve as Principal Faculty member of the PA Studies On-Campus Program with didactic teaching, program service, program assessment, and community service responsibilities through the following duties, as assigned by the Program Director:

  • Developing, reviewing, and revising as necessary the mission, goals, and competencies of the PA Studies On-Campus Program.
  • Serve as Course Director for PAS 2109 – Medical Physiology and Pathophysiology (Spring Semester):
    • Design, organize, and deliver the course curriculum.
    • Coordinate contributing faculty and guest lecturers.
    • Develop and administer formative and summative assessments.
    • Analyze student performance data and revise course content accordingly.
    • Ensure alignment with ARC-PA accreditation standards and NCCPA content blueprint guidelines.
  • Serve as Co-Course Director for PAS 2714 – Transition to Professional Practice
    • Co-facilitate instruction across medical knowledge, clinical and technical skills, clinical reasoning, interpersonal skills, and professional behaviors;
    • Support summative evaluations including OSCEs and practical assessments.
    • Contribute to PANCE preparation activities
      • Design a comprehensive curriculum based on the NCCPA PANCE content blueprint.
      • Develop and/or curate question banks, mock examinations, and high-yield review materials.
      • Facilitate live review sessions and small-group case discussions.
  • Coordinate faculty and clinical preceptor contributions across all content areas.
  • Continuously refine the course based on student performance data and national board examination trends.
  • Serve as Director of Student Success:
    • Develop and implement a proactive, data-informed Student Success Program.
    • Establish early identification systems for at-risk students and execute individualized intervention and remediation strategies.
    • Facilitate study skills workshops and wellness programming.
    • Collaborate with course directors and clinical coordinators to monitor longitudinal student performance.
    • Prepare periodic student success reports for program leadership.
    • Recruit and retain community tutors, oversee the clinical year tutoring program, and provide mentorship for tutors.
  • Provide student instruction across the didactic and/or clinical curriculum as assigned, including small-group sessions, laboratory and simulation activities, skills labs, and OSCEs.
  • Evaluate student performance, providing timely and constructive feedback, and contributing to remediation planning and student progress review processes.
  • Design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate curriculum in collaboration with program faculty and leadership.
  • Advise and mentor didactic and clinical year students.
  • Evaluate the PA Studies Residential Program to include ongoing program assessment and contributions to ARC-PA accreditation materials and self-study preparation.

Serve as Assistant Professor in the Department of PA Studies through the following, additional duties, as assigned by the Department Chair:

  • Communicate and advance the strategic plan and initiatives of the University, School, and Department, including championing the commitment to community engagement and fostering an environment where all members of the university community can thrive.
  • Collaborate with staff and faculty of other Programs in the Department of PA Studies and assist in the upholding of current and development of new Department and Program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a collegial learning and working environment for faculty, staff, students, community partners, and other vital parties.
  • Represent the program on department-, school-, and university-level committees and in community service activities.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities, research and other scholarly activities regarding educational and professional practice.
  • Participate in local, regional, and/or national PA educational and professional organizations.
  • Maintain applicable professional certification (NCCPA, etc.).
  • Other duties/tasks as assigned by the Program Director and/or Department Chair.

Qualifications and Experience: Required

  • Prior teaching, scholarship, and/or research experience at the professional level.
  • Three years of experience in clinical practice as a Physician Assistant/Physician Associate.
  • Current National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA) certification.
  • Master’s Degree in PA Studies or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in student academic advising, tutoring program development, or student success coordination.
  • Strong foundation in human physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical medicine across multiple specialty areas.

Preferred

  • Record of intra- and extramural funding for training and/or research activities.
  • Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, or other Research or Professional Doctoral degree (either existing or in process).
  • Prior experience as a PA program course director or academic program administrator.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PANCE/PANRE content blueprint and board preparation methodologies.
  • Familiarity with ARC-PA accreditation standards and processes.
  • Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) and instructional technology platforms.
