Job Summary
The International Advisor II serves as a designated school official (DSO). Advises international students and processers a variety of documents to ensure compliance with federal immigration regulations. Advises international students on matters of personal and cultural adjustment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Processes immigration documents and student requests for F1 students in a timely and accurate manner while maintaining data integrity and solid record keeping.
- Advising international students on immigration and academic issues.
- Advises international students on matters of personal and cultural adjustment.
- Advising may occur in person, on the phone or via email.
- Responsible for advising and processing of more complex case work including but limited to: reinstatements, employment bases applications, internships, and others.
- May work with specialized populations or cohorts.
- Maintain communication with various departments including: Health Center, New Maverick Orientation, Academic Departments as well as government agencies such as USCIS, SEVP, SSN office, DMV office, and ICE.
- Presents information regarding immigration regulations, employment regulations, campus resources, cultural adjustment, and campus technology to large groups of students.
- Work alongside Graduate Office and ELI office regarding students enrolled in GESP (Graduate English Skills Program), to update exceptions page in PeopleSoft to reflect the number of hours they are enrolled.
- Assists with training of junior International Education Advisors.
- Assists with campus community outreach regarding F-1 status requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- One (1) year of experience in immigration advising, preferably in an academic setting and working with F-1 students.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as a designated school official.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Three (3) years of DSO experience, experience working or living abroad..
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of F1 visa regulations, requirements and restrictions.
- Ability to process and properly file immigration forms.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and instruction.
- Working knowledge of computer programs, including SEVIS RTI, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office, Sunapsis, and Image Now.
- Ability to advise and process immigration casework.
- Customer service driven with the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and a sensitivity of students’ needs.
