Senior Environmental Engineer - Project Technical Leader at CDM Smith

As a Project Technical Leader (PTL) you will play a critical role in delivering high‑quality technical outcomes across our projects. In this role, you would be responsible for defining and driving the project’s technical vision, working in close partnership with the Project Manager (PM) and reporting directly to the PM.

In this role, you will coordinate the technical content of both design and non‑design projects, using proactive and preventative delivery approaches to minimize rework, improve efficiency, and ensure consistent, high‑quality results.

Key Responsibilities

Translate high‑level project objectives into engineering designs for water and wastewater treatment facilities, water and sewer systems, pipelines, pump stations, and related infrastructure, ranging from basic to high complexity.

Lead technical coordination across disciplines to ensure designs meet client needs, project requirements, and regulatory standards.

Review technical designs and reports for quality, accuracy, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; provide technical approval on completed deliverables as appropriate.

Ensure all technical work aligns with firm standards, policies, and best practices.

Conduct site visits, field reviews, and technical studies as needed to confirm design assumptions and location‑specific requirements; update design criteria as projects evolve.

Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) program by developing white papers, documenting innovative or specialized designs, and supporting publication in technical journals.

Collaborate with sales and business development teams to support proposals and responses to RFPs, including development and review of technical approaches.

Engage with current and prospective clients to understand their needs, provide technical insight, and support long‑term relationships.

Represent the firm at conferences, symposia, and industry events to enhance visibility of technical expertise and services.

Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training to junior staff, supporting their professional growth within the discipline and firm.

May oversee and review the technical work of junior engineers assigned to project teams.

Perform other duties as needed to support successful project delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.

Professional engineering (PE) license.

10 years of related experience.

Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.

Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Skills and Abilities

Advanced proficiency with Computer‑Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) tools, including 3D and 4D design environments and model‑based workflows.

Strong command of engineering design principles, with the ability to apply sound technical judgment to complex infrastructure projects.

High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, for technical analysis, documentation, and reporting.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.

Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, with experience applying regulatory requirements throughout the design and delivery process.
