Referral Intake Review Nurse (RN) - PRN at Desert Parkway Behavioral Healthcare Hospital
The Referral Intake Review Nurse (RN) is responsible for real‑time monitoring, review, and screening of all incoming faxed referrals to ensure timely response, accurate documentation, and seamless coordination with Intake RNs and the Call Center. This role supports census stability, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency by ensuring referrals are processed promptly and consistently. All clinical assessments and admission decisions are completed by the Mobile Assessor RN or Intake RN and communicated to the physician on call prior to admission, decline, or transfer for medical clearance.
This role does not perform clinical Intake functions such as walk ins, triage, assessments, directs, crisis intervention, or obtaining admission orders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor incoming faxed referrals continuously during assigned shifts to ensure no gaps in coverage.
- Review and screen incoming referrals for completeness and urgency.
- Document referral activity in AIS and Concord in real time.
- Communicate referral details promptly to Intake RNs and the Charge Nurse.
- Escalate delays or system barriers immediately to the Intake Supervisor or Director.
- Coordinate with the Call Center to resolve discrepancies or confirm receipt of referrals.
- Communicate with referring hospitals or facilities to clarify missing or incomplete referral information and ensure accurate documentation.
- Maintain accurate logs of referral volume, response times, and outcomes.
- Participate in shift huddles to report trends, issues, or workflow concerns.
- Ensure all referral documentation is accurate, complete, and entered in real time to support regulatory compliance and continuity of care.
- Schedule will cover shifts for planned vacations and unexpected callouts.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES (When Fax Volume Is Low)
These tasks support the referral workflow without pulling the nurse into clinical Intake duties.
- Reconcile AIS and Concord entries for accuracy and completeness.
- Audit referral logs for pending or incomplete items.
- Follow up on pending referrals requiring clarification or additional information.
- Prepare shift‑to‑shift handoff notes summarizing referral activity.
- Verify referral outcomes and ensure documentation is closed appropriately.
Requirements
- Valid Nevada State RN License required
- Minimum one (1) year of behavioral health or acute care experience preferred
- Experience with AIS, Concord, or similar EHR systems preferred
- Strong communication, time‑management, and documentation skills
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to triage referral urgency
- Proficiency with software and/or equipment (Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
