Job Title: Database Administrator

Reports to: Senior Database Administrator

The Database Administrator assesses and develops strategic goals for the design, installation, and maintenance of production databases in conjunction with data owners and internal customers. This role installs, monitors, maintains, and performance-tunes production databases, manages SSRS reports, and provides technical support for specific applications, while ensuring high levels of data availability, integrity, and security. The Database Administrator is responsible for databases, policies, related software, and procedures to ensure data integrity and availability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
  • Install, design, and maintain database system software and implement database security measures.
  • Create or support creation of required queries and reports in response to business user needs.
  • Work with application development staff and Senior DBA to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Establish appropriate end-user database access levels and develop routines for end users to facilitate best practices database use.
  • Monitor database system details, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Analyze source data to assist in preparing iterative design changes, database refactoring, and creating or modifying reference data.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases.
  • Proactively perform capacity planning, monitoring, optimizing, and allocating physical data storage for database systems.
  • Perform database transaction and security audits, and plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.

  • Serve as a primary administrator of all databases in a MS SQL environment, providing monitoring, performance, and maintenance.
  • Facilitate database restores and data refreshes, and implement data models and database designs, data access, and table maintenance codes.
  • Write and debug lines of SQL code for applications, and maintain baseline database backups for various product releases.
  • Stand up development and testing database instances on demand.
  • Exhibit competency in problem solving, data analysis, business rule validation, data integration, data quality, dependency analysis, and estimation and delivery of complex SQL Server solutions.
  • Understand the needs and requirements of the applications using the databases and provide support for these applications.
  • Provide technical leadership on database systems and solutions by creating models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones.
  • Provide individual mentoring and training on databases and tools.
  • Recommend, test, and evaluate new technologies, software tools, and required skill sets; recommend and implement improvements.

Education/Experience:

  • BS degree in Information Technology or Computer Science and at least 3 years of work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three plus years of SQL Server database experience in database administration, including experience installing, configuring, designing, patching, archiving, and monitoring to include performance tuning databases with indexing.
  • Current experience with optimization of SQL statements, writing and delivering implementation SQL with rollback and logging capabilities, and experience in the development of modular SSIS solutions with robust error handling, logging, archival, and other foundational capabilities.
  • Functional ability with debugging and troubleshooting SSIS processes in production environments, including experience with packaging and deployment of SSIS solutions.
  • Highly competent in the ability to manage multiple projects from start to finish while maintaining priorities and details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams, internally and externally, with demonstrated problem-solving skills and creativity for developing innovative solutions and applications.
