Senior Epidemiologist (Maryland Poison Center) at University of Maryland, Baltimore
The University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy , Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (P-SHOR) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Epidemiologist to work within the Maryland Poison Center.
The MD Poison Center (a subsidiary of the School of Pharmacy) provides high quality poison information and prevention services to the public and healthcare professionals while decreasing the cost and complexity of poisoning and overdose care. This role provides direction and technical expertise in managing and examining data for the epidemiologic/public health programs and projects. This position independently leads projects, contributes to complex data collection initiatives, and develops and oversees research and surveillance activities.

PRIMARY DUTIES
Provide direction and technical expertise in managing and examining data for the epidemiologic/public health programs and projects. Conduct or perform independent project(s) and participate in multi-faceted data collection programs. Develop and oversee independent research initiatives and surveillance activities.
Design and implement surveys and meta-analyses. Collect and document comprehensive data of research findings.
Perform data analysis, write reports, and prepare presentations of summarized statistical findings, may include multi-variant analysis or other complex methodologies.
Analyze poison exposure data to detect public health threats, identify trends, and support decision-making.
Develop and maintain dashboards and data visualization tools to communicate findings to stakeholders.
Collaborate with poison center staff, public health officials, and national partners on surveillance and response efforts.
Support the design and implementation of data collection tools and protocols tailored to state-specific needs.
Prepare materials for presentations, stakeholder briefings, and public awareness campaigns.
Provide consultation on the development of research questions (e.g., operationalization of variables, methodology, and analytical plans).
Contribute to development of research manuscripts, grant writing, program evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives.
Stay current with epidemiologic best practices, toxicology literature, and emerging health threats.
Participate in relevant workgroups and committees at the state and national levels.
Communicate to staff legal expectations, limitations, and implications of collection, management, dissemination, and using data. Lead collaborations with investigators and recommend best methods for data collection and analysis.
Organize surveillance activities data needs, implementation and evaluation of system collection. Assess needs for special analyses, such as survival, cost effectiveness, or cost benefit. Make recommendations for disease control activities and prevention based on research findings.
Prepare and document research findings for publications of journal articles and grant proposals.
Formulate new interventions on the basis of evidence and control measures in response to findings.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Poison Center.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Master's degree in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, public health, health sciences or services.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience analyzing studies using a range statistical techniques in a related environment.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, R, STATA). Two (2) years’ experience analyzing studies using a range statistical techniques in a related environment.
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
- Knowledge of epidemiologic research, methodology, epidemiologic data collection procedures, and epidemiologic study and analysis design; of descriptive and inferential statistics, of biomedical sciences.
- Knowledge of interviewing and investigating techniques used in epidemiology.
- Skilled in designing and using surveillance systems to monitor problems.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of data structures, coding schemes, and data sources.
- Ability to effectively use technology in data analysis and management.
- Ability to manage projects or tasks within a project that involves a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to provide theoretical, conceptual and writing support on research analysis and findings.
- Skill in communication is appropriate to the audience: with scientific jargon for other researchers and in an accessible manner for non-scientists and a clinical audience.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

HIRING RANGE:$73,500 - $85,000 per year/ Commensurate with education and experience.
