Job Summary & Position Rationale
The Afterschool Program Support will implement program activities and create a safe, engaging, and fun environment for students. This role serves as a supportive team member in delivering high-quality educational and enrichment experiences.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide direct support and supervision to children during scheduled afterschool programming.
- Promote positive interactions, encourage friendships, and act as a positive role model for students.
- Foster a fun, inclusive, and safe environment for all participants.
- Ensure adherence to all program safety guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe activity space, including care of equipment and supplies.
- Collaborate with fellow staff to support program activities and ensure smooth daily operations.
- Maintain reliable means of transportation to and from work locations.
- Additional Tasks, Job-Related Training, & Professional Development: Participate in additional duties as assigned and directed by department leadership.
- Collaborate with school personnel, families, and community partners to support student success.
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, and participation; maintain records and report concerns to program leadership.
- Support continuous program improvement through regular feedback and assessment.
- Provide instructions to children and staff for specific enrichment focus areas of pottery, claywork, ceramics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- interested in or currently pursuing career or education in early childhood education environment
- 48 units required or NCLB/TABE certificate
- Background in afterschool program or out-of-school time (OST) programming in a public school setting, ideally training in art or creative enrichment activities for kids.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, school personnel, and community partners.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and take direction from senior staff in a fast-paced environment
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace tools
- Enthusiasm for working with children in a school-based setting.
- Positive attitude, strong communication skills, and ability to lead by example.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, or any other threshold language. Ability to lead and engage with large groups of students across a variety of educational settings (e.g. library, cafeteria, classrooms)
Work Environment, Conditions & Requirements:
- Physical Space: When performing administrative tasks, work will be conducted in a shared, open space without a designated workspace, using shared equipment. Physical tasks may involve exposure to outdoor temperatures and elements, as well as typical urban noise levels.
- Student-Facing Environment: Must be comfortable working directly with youth in dynamic, high-energy, and sometimes noisy settings. Activities may include supervising play, leading enrichment projects, and managing transitions between activities.
- Company Culture: A collaborative, multilingual staff supporting various organizational needs.
- Team Dynamics: Collaborates with other staff, volunteers, contractors, or fellows to support and oversee students, ensuring safety and positive engagement.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all student and employee information, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, including HIPAA where applicable. Ensures adherence to all local, state, and federal laws and organizational policies.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, and push up to 50 pounds on wheels.
- Must be able to read memos, computer screens, parent communications and documents.
- Must have high manual dexterity and ability to move around a room to provide supervision to children.
- Must be able to reach above the shoulder level, be able to bend, squat and sit, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel, twist/turn.
- Must be able to participate in indoor/outdoor activities, games, and physical activities for extended periods of time.
