Job Summary
The Superintendent of Bus Operations Control is a leadership role responsible for directing bus operations control center activities, including real-time dispatch, communications, and service disruption response. This role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable bus service delivery, oversees staff performance, and coordinates emergency and operational responses across departments and external partners.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with multiple departments to ensure routes, schedules, equipment, and services are coordinated and implemented efficiently.
- Participates in the development and administration of transit operations programs, policies, goals, and objectives.
- Enforces compliance with policies, procedures, safety rules, and government regulations, evaluates staff performance, and manages operations to performance measures.
- Trains and assigns personnel and supervises coordination of emergency service restoration and personnel notification.
- Ensures compliance with operations policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Maintains and monitors towing contracts and services to maximize efficiency and control costs.
- Plans, manages, and supervises special events and emergency operations in coordination with internal teams and external partners.
- Communicates support for organizational goals, interacts with stakeholders at all levels, maintains external relationships, and keeps involved parties informed.
- Facilitates customer satisfaction by resolving customer complaints and addressing root causes of service issues.
- Responds to the control center or incident scene to restore service during emergencies.
- Manages and coordinates bus service activities, oversees response to planned and unplanned service disruptions, and directs communications to personnel and customers.
- Manages real-time bus communication and dispatch operations for a large fleet and supervisory staff.
- Compiles and submits reports documenting daily activities and performance objectives.
- Works with technical teams to maximize the use of vehicle locator systems and prepares analytical reports using operational data.
- Coordinates with municipal departments and emergency personnel on street closures affecting bus operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong ability to perform effectively under stressful conditions.
- Strong ability to analyze operations and make decisions to ensure quality services.
- Strong ability to establish operating procedures, plan and execute service activities, and coordinate diverse personnel.
- Strong ability to establish professional relationships with police, emergency services, and external partners to support service delivery.
- Strong skills in managing employee relations issues and resolving customer service complaints.
- Strong ability to manage and supervise large groups of employees across multiple departments.
- Comprehensive knowledge of service area and routes and operating procedures for bus operations control.
Work Environment
- Control center environment with continuous monitoring of transit operations and communication systems.
- High-pressure, fast-paced environment requiring rapid decision-making during service disruptions and emergencies.
- Frequent coordination with internal departments, external agencies, emergency personnel, and community partners.
- On-call and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.
- Occasional travel to incident scenes, operational locations, and meetings.
- Work involving emergency response situations, service interruptions, and public safety coordination.
