Volunteer Coordinator at City of Corpus Christi
Overview
The Volunteer Coordinator oversees and supports volunteer programs dedicated to animal services, with the goal of enhancing the welfare and care of sheltered animals. This role involves supervising volunteer activities, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, and fostering a positive environment for both volunteer staff and the animals they support.
Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and execute the department’s volunteer programs, ensuring alignment with the shelter’s mission and operational needs
- Continuously assess the volunteer program to identify opportunities for improvement and implement strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
- Collaborate closely with shelter supervisors, foster coordinators, and adoption counselors to ensure volunteers are well‑integrated into shelter operations
- Recruit volunteers through community events, social media, local publications, and partnerships with schools and businesses
- Conduct orientations, review applications, interview candidates, and assess suitability for available volunteer roles
- Work with shelter supervisors to identify areas of need and adjust recruitment strategies accordingly
- Deliver new volunteer orientations and provide ongoing mentorship and specialized training
- Educate volunteers on shelter policies, procedures, expectations, and safe animal-handling techniques
- Train volunteers to recognize signs of animal stress, fear, or aggression and respond appropriately
- Plan and coordinate volunteer-driven events, appreciation activities, and community engagement initiatives
- Track volunteer participation, activities, and achievements, maintaining accurate and organized records
- Prepare qualitative and quantitative reports demonstrating program impact and alignment with departmental goals
- Schedule volunteers to meet program and event needs, ensuring balanced task distribution based on skills and interests
- Provide ongoing supervision, observation, and feedback to ensure adherence to protocols and effective task performance
- Address volunteer concerns, support conflict resolution, and lead volunteer recognition efforts
- Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedure
- May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
· Non-Exempt – Full-Time
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
· In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Qualifications
· Associate’s degree (AA /AS)
· Two (2) years of experience
Licenses and Certifications
Required
· A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
