To help drive Memphis Goodwill Excel Centers (GEC) by helping maintain a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for students, staff, visitors, and guests at The Excel Center. This person serves as the daily point of contact for campus safety and security operations, including visitor management, student and staff safety, access control, emergency response support, and coordination of paid security staff.
Function
The Campus Safety Coordinator works closely with campus leadership, facilities, front office staff, security vendors, and Goodwill leadership to make sure safety and security procedures are followed consistently and that concerns are addressed quickly and professionally.
Essential Responsibilities: Visitor Safety and Security
- Monitor and support the visitor check-in and check-out process.
- Ensure all visitors follow campus entry procedures, including identification, sign-in, badges, and escort requirements when needed.
- Help prevent unauthorized access to the building.
- Respond to concerns involving visitors, vendors, or guests on campus.
- Support front office staff during busy arrival, dismissal, or high-traffic times.
Student Safety and Security
- Help maintain a safe and orderly environment for students throughout the school day.
- Monitor common areas, entrances, exits, hallways, parking lots, and other assigned areas.
- Support campus leadership with student behavior concerns, conflicts, or safety issues.
- Assist with de-escalation when student incidents occur.
- Document and report student safety or security concerns according to school procedures.
- Maintain a visible and professional presence that supports a positive and safe school culture.
Staff Safety and Security
- Support staff safety by responding to concerns, escort requests, or building access issues.
- Help ensure staff members are following safety and security procedures related to doors, badges, keys, visitor access, and emergency protocols.
- Communicate security updates or concerns to campus leadership and facilities leadership.
- Serve as a point of contact for staff when immediate safety or security support is needed.
Coordination of Paid Security Staff
- Provide daily direction and support to contracted or paid security staff assigned to The Excel Center.
- Ensure security staff understand their posts, responsibilities, schedules, and expectations.
- Monitor the performance, presence, and professionalism of assigned security personnel.
- Communicate staffing concerns, coverage gaps, or performance issues to the appropriate supervisor or vendor contact.
- Help coordinate security coverage for special events, meetings, testing days, graduations, or other campus activities.
Building Safety and Access Control
- Monitor building entrances, exits, and access-controlled doors.
- Check that doors are secured and not propped open.
- Report access control, camera, alarm, lock, or door issues to facilities leadership.
- Assist with daily opening, closing, and building safety checks as assigned.
- Support the proper use of security systems, including cameras, access control, visitor management systems, and radios.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Support campus leadership during emergency situations, drills, lockdowns, evacuations, medical incidents, and severe weather events.
- Assist with emergency communication and crowd movement during drills or actual events.
- Help ensure emergency procedures are followed by students, staff, visitors, and security personnel.
- Report safety hazards, suspicious activity, or emergency concerns immediately.
- Participate in safety team meetings, training, and after-action reviews as needed.
Documentation and Communication
- Complete incident reports and security logs accurately and promptly.
- Communicate daily concerns, incidents, or trends to campus leadership and facilities leadership.
- Maintain confidentiality when handling student, staff, visitor, or incident information.
- Provide clear, professional communication with students, staff, visitors, vendors, and law enforcement when needed.
Qualifications: Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in security, school safety, law enforcement, military service, facilities operations, or a related field.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful situations.
- Strong communication and de-escalation skills.
- Ability to work respectfully with adult students, staff, visitors, and community members.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use security-related systems.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the building for extended periods.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow established procedures.
Preferred
- Experience working in a school, nonprofit, workforce development, or adult education setting.
- Experience supervising, coordinating, or providing direction to security staff.
- Training in CPR, first aid, crisis response, de-escalation, or emergency management.
- Familiarity with camera systems, access control systems, visitor management systems, radios, and incident reporting.
