About You And This Role
Dow has an exciting opportunity for a Material Handler located in Knoxville, TN! The Dow Knoxville Site is part of the Dow Coating Materials business, producing primary polymer components of paint, adhesives, and other products. This role is in the Raw material department, the starting point for marshalling and offloading our raw materials into relevant storage systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead and perform the unloading of rail cars and tank trucks of raw materials.
- Demonstrate ownership of the safety and productivity of your area.
- Demonstrate collaboration with your team to ensure the safety and productivity of the entire site.
- Consistently treat other team members with respect, and constantly help to build and maintain an inclusive environment for all site employees.
- Learn and follow Dow and Knoxville plant policies, principles, procedures, standards, and practices.
- Operate and monitor the health of process equipment, such as pumps, valves, hoses, and instrument.
- Monitor process conditions, key performance metrics, equipment, and control systems and make decisions relevant to safety and productivity.
- Conduct troubleshooting of equipment, chemistry, and process issues and work to resolve them safely and effectively.
- Perform minor repairs of equipment.
- Conduct effective shift relief, with seamless handoffs at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Maintain qualification in assigned areas and complete training goals in a timely manner.
- Proactively fill gaps in personal skills and knowledge by asking questions and seeking out help.
- Mentor and train others.
- Work safely, quickly, and effectively with a team to resolve emergency situations.
- Honestly and proactively communicate operating errors in order to safely resolve unplanned events.
- Work on root cause investigation teams to identify preventative actions after unplanned events.
- Proactively identify improvement opportunities.
- Expectation to add skills and qualifications in isolation of energy (red tagging, lock-out/tag-out), safe work permit writing, and shift activity coordination.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
- Valid US Driver's License. This is required in order to operate yard trucks.
- Willing and able to work overtime and a various shift schedule.
- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
Preferred Qualifications
- Logistics experience, including with hazardous materials.
- Relevant associates degree or higher education, or military experience.
- Control system experience (e.g. Siemens, DeltaV, etc.).
- Aspen Process Explorer experience.
- Fork truck or forklift certification.
- Mechanical, maintenance experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel.
- Experience working within and leading teams.
- Experience with proactive identification, prioritization, and execution of multiple tasks.
Physical Demands
Willing and able to meet physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Wear safety equipment, such as earplugs, goggles, steel-toed boots, full chemical suit and fall-prevention harnesses.
- Ability to work outside in different weather scenarios.
- Wear and use respirators.
- Perform frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Work in tight or closed-in spaces.
- Climb stairs/ladders and work high off the ground.
- Stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- Maneuver drums using available ergonomic assistance equipment.
- This role does involve elevated work greater than or equal to four feet above the ground.
- Essential functions of this position may require, among other things, that you use particular types of equipment -- such as on-site safety equipment that has specific weight limitations whereby your own weight, plus the weight of tools and other items and materials, must not exceed a certain threshold. (For example, some types of safety equipment may be rated for a maximum weight limit of 300 pounds total.) - Troubleshooting Skills: Strong skills in identifying and resolving issues with technical equipment and processes.
- Safety Awareness: A clear focus on safety, including participation in safety programs, training, and the ability to identify and report near-miss incidents.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Proficiency in operating and maintaining equipment, with an understanding of the fundamentals of physical chemistry.
- Teamwork: The ability to work effectively in a team environment, often setting priorities and completing work activities with minimal supervision.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey information and collaborate with team members.
- Computer Proficiency: The ability to use computers to perform job tasks, including operating automated manufacturing equipment.
