Job Title: Safety Director

Summary Of Responsibilities

The Safety Director develops, executes and ensures continuity of the company’s Safety Programs. These programs result in a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment as well as improve culture, productivity and profitability via safe and quality workmanship.

The Take Charge SAFETY DIRECTOR

Proactively Reduce EMR/TRIR

  • Manages and implements company’s Safety Strategic Plan
  • Participates in all SCG Risk Control meetings, calls and workshops
  • Performs job site safety surveys before and during projects to identify potential hazardous or unsafe conditions that employees may be exposed to
  • Engages with Estimating, Project Management and Field Operations leadership to create specific safety plans for projects and tasks to mitigate hazards and unsafe conditions well in advance of project site activities
  • Orders suspension of activities posing a threat to workers and other individuals

Continuously Improve Safety Knowledge through Training

  • Develops annual safety training calendar. Proactively assists HR and management to identify and develop craft training needs and program
  • Conducts internal training sessions for OSHA 10-hour, competent person, trenching and shoring as well as other topics related to company operations
  • Participates in training and continuing education to maintain all necessary personal and company safety certifications
  • Proactively engages with industry professionals to create a network of resources focused on best practices and continuous safety improvement
  • Coordinates 3rd party training sessions as needed
  • Tracks all safety training attendance, follow up sessions needed, etc. and can report out regularly

Support Field Personnel And Create Company-Wide Safety Culture

  • Leads and coordinates Durr’s Safety Committee
  • Performs GL, equipment, auto and workers’ comp accident investigations
  • Performs routine job site visits for quality assurance with regards to job safety to create open lines of communication with field employees and to proactively address issues
  • Monitors supervisor’s daily and weekly safety meetings through frequent attendance and management of meeting attendance information and conducts the safety meeting every 3rd week of the month
  • Documents and effectively communicates issues to Durr Team to create a culture of accountability and learning from each other’s experiences
  • Assist during the pre-bid process to give input on safety measures that need to be included in the bid
  • Assists field operations by performing on-the-job and task specific training including the use of specific safety equipment and tools
  • Attends operations meetings to coordinate jobsite safety with project managers/supervisors
  • Arranges for employee physical examinations, first aid, and other medical attention when required
  • Manages and implements Emergency Plan for the company
  • Coordinates and manages company’s Safety Awards Program

Handles Claims Management

  • Manages company’s captive insurance as it pertains to GL, Workers Compensation and Auto claims and assists in coordination with insurance groups/agencies
  • Manages insurance claims and monitors the activity of the claims adjusters and legal team

Optimal Compliance for Entire Durr Team (employees, subs, public)

  • Remains up-to-date on most recent OSHA standards to ensure company’s adherence to OSHA Safety Guidelines
  • Monitors filing of any/all OSHA related documents
  • Creates and monitors subcontractors safety standards and requirements
  • Monitors filing of the Tier II application with DEQ regarding storage of on-site chemicals/combustibles
  • Monitors Spill Control Program for company’s adherence to guidelines

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both internally and externally
  • Must be proficient in computer based solutions
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrates ability to be productive in office and field environments
  • Must be able to set the example for job safety and be able to enforce high safety standards
  • Must be available at all hours for emergency situations
  • Must be able to identify on job hazards in order to prevent potential incidents from happening

Education And/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred. Five (5) years experience as a Safety, Risk Control or General Manager to a Construction, Industrial, Engineering and/or Construction Management Firm or related field preferred.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear; climb stairs and/or ladders. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
