Position Overview

We are seeking ten (10) highly skilled Journeyman Electricians to support the Facilities Management department at the Dallas VA Medical Center. The selected technicians will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the extensive electrical systems and critical utility infrastructure across the hospital campus.

This vital role ensures uninterrupted power and operational safety for clinical environments, HVAC systems, medical equipment, and emergency back-up power generators. Candidates must have a deep technical background, including experience working safely with medium-voltage systems (up to 4160 volts AC), and the ability to work independently to keep our Veterans' care facility safe and fully powered.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • System Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and resolve complex electrical failures across hospital systems using standard testing instruments (such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and megohmmeters).
  • Equipment Maintenance: Service and repair electrical motors, HVAC electrical components, alarm systems, and delicate medical or laboratory equipment.
  • Infrastructure Management: Perform routine maintenance, monitoring, and repairs on high-stakes power infrastructure, including switchgear, transformers, and emergency backup power generation systems.
  • Installation & Circuit Modifications: Pull wire, run conduit, and install, expand, or modify electrical circuits and panels to support hospital renovations and clinical equipment updates.
  • Preventive Maintenance (PM): Execute scheduled PM routines on motor control centers, control circuits, and secondary distribution systems.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all electrical activities, fabrications, and installations comply strictly with the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E standards, and OSHA regulations.
  • Independent Operation: Carry out assignments independently with minimal daily oversight, while occasionally providing guidance or direct supervision to electrical helpers.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Physical Exertion: Highly physical role requiring frequent heavy lifting, carrying, bending, standing, and climbing.
  • Variable Conditions: Duties will be performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, occasionally requiring work at heights (on ladders, lifts, or scaffolding) or within tight, cramped crawlspaces and utility vaults.
  • Hazard Awareness: Working in a high-voltage, high-acuity medical environment carries risks of electrical shock, burns, and exposure to loud mechanical rooms. Strict adherence to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols, and safe work practices is mandatory.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: Minimum of 4–5 years of commercial or industrial electrical experience (prior maintenance experience in a hospital environment, military medical facility, or large federal complex is highly preferred).

  • Voltage Competency: Demonstrated experience and safety training in working with systems utilizing up to 4160 volts AC.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, single-line diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • General Requirements:
    • Exceptional troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for federal computer network access and facility security badging).
