Details

  • Highly visible, student-facing role on the Instruction team, reporting directly to the Education Program Manager. You’ll be responsible for integrating critical thinking, problem-solving, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and global citizenship into your classes, tracking student progress, and helping students realize their potential.
  • You must be comfortable suggesting and implementing new ideas that improve the quality and integrity of Mission Bit and our curriculum. You understand that there are always new opportunities for improvement and ways to elevate our standards.

Hours

  • 7 +/- hours per week

Training and Onboarding

  • August 27 - September 3, 2026, generally between 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM
    • Remote: August 27, August 31, and September 2
    • In-person at Mission Bit Office: September 1 and 3
  • Classroom site visits will be hosted between August 31 through September 3, 2026

Weekly Schedule

    • Monday: 3:15 PM - 4:00 PM
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays: 4:15 PM - 7:15 PM
  • Remote instructors:
    • Monday: 3:15 PM - 7:15 PM

Roles and responsibilities

Lead instructor

  • Create an inclusive and community-based classroom culture surrounding the Mission Bit core values of social justice, community, accountability, smart risks, and love
  • Prepare and deliver lessons using Mission Bit's curriculum
  • Develop meaningful relationships with students
  • Communicate and collaborate with the TA and other instructional staff
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Communicate student progress and success throughout the course to the Program Staff and Education Program Manager so that we can collectively support students’ learning
  • Ensure students are developing sufficient understanding to build their capstone project at the end of the semester that can be showcased at our Demo Day

Teaching Assistant (TA)

  • Create an inclusive and community-based classroom culture surrounding the Mission Bit core values of social justice, community, accountability, smart risks, and love
  • Plan and lead community-building games and activities
  • Support students on their projects in class
  • Promote positive, productive collaboration between students
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Communicate and collaborate with Lead Instructor and other instructional staff
  • Lead class in the event that the lead instructor is out

Workshop Leader

  • Facilitate in-person workshops between the hours of 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM, plus occasional evenings with external partners
    • Workshops will include lectures, live-coding demonstrations, coding challenges, and Q&A sessions with students
  • Meet with the Curriculum Developer for training sessions
  • Create an inclusive and community-based classroom culture surrounding the Mission Bit core values of social justice, community, accountability, smart risks, and love
  • Develop individual and meaningful relationships with students
  • Communicate student progress and success throughout the course to the Program Staff and Education Program Manager so we can collectively support students’ learning

Requirements

  • At least one prior semester as an instructor, alumni, or volunteer with Mission Bit
  • 1-2+ years of experience with Web Design (HTML/CSS), Python, Game Design (Unity/C#), or AI
  • Some experience in teaching or working with youth in educational settings

Additional Requirements

  • Complete coding or teaching demo and interviews (for volunteers and alumni only)
  • Strong understanding of the relevant programming languages, platforms, and/or devices
  • Punctual, organized, and prepared
  • Values aligned with Mission Bit and a passion for sharing CS knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable and compelling in public speaking situations
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Self-starting with the ability to effectively work autonomously with little oversight
  • Intelligent, dedicated, flexible, with a willingness to experiment

It’s not required, but it’s a nice bonus if you…

  • Have experience in project-based learning, asset-based teaching, and/or culturally relevant teaching
  • Are bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog, or Samoan

  • Lead Instructor (San Francisco and remote): $28.00 / hour
  • Teaching Assistant (San Francisco and remote): $23.00 / hour
  • Workshop Leader (San Francisco): +$1/hour on top of regular rate
